Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Unlocking the Gilgamesh Superboss

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Superbosses in Final Fantasy games are nothing new for the series, with the first proper ones being introduced in Final Fantasy V. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also has its own superboss, in the form of Gilgamesh. In order to fight him, you will have to progress through the Protorelic storyline, which is an optional series of content in every major region of the game. The best thing to do is complete these as you carry on through the game, but they are all different and can be quite annoying, since some contain challenging minigames.

Gilgamesh is the superboss in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

All Protorelic Locations

Thankfully, we have covered all of the Protorelic challenges on their own separate pages. Each of them will have four different spots in each of the regions, some of which are pretty standard, while others will involve you partaking in various minigames. If you intend to get the Platinum Trophy, then you will need to actually do all of those, since you need to defeat the superboss for a trophy. Note that "Fort Condor" iconFort Condor Hard Mode and Gears and Gambits Hard Mode do not need to be done in order to fight Gilgamesh.

The following links will take you to each of the Protorelic pages for each of the regions:

In addition to the above, you will also need to acquire all of the Summon Materia in the game. All six of the Summon Materia are obtained after defeating them in their respective Combat Simulator fight, which unlock during the course of the main story, so there’s nothing special there.

Gilgamesh Island Location

Once you have finished all of the above, you will be able to access Gilgamesh Island. However, while you could potentially do it before beating the game, it is meant as a postgame fight, since all of the fights are set at level 70 (there are multiple fights, yes). Upon completing the game, you will gain a boost to both EXP and AP earned, which also helps in reaching the max level of 70. For info on that, check the Best Way to Farm Experience page. It will also probably not hurt to level up some materia, but it’s not too big of a deal.

(1 of 4) The location of the entrance to Gilgamesh Island on the map.

Upon reaching Chapter 12 (or Chapter 13) and having access to the open sea with your seafaring craft, you will be able to head straight for Gilgamesh Island. When you’re exploring the Meridian Ocean, start heading north and look for the map marker that says Gilgamesh Island Entrance. You’ll know you’re in the right spot, as you can see some torii gates along the side of the mountain, which is the actual entrance. After a very long tunnel, dock on the island and follow the path to the main building, until you trigger a cutscene with the man himself.

Well, you’re not fighting him just yet, as you have to go through the “Tempering” first. There will be three shrines on this very island, which will require you to participate in a battle. Of course, those battles will be against the very summons you have already done, except you’ll be fighting two summons in each of the battles. Now, for the most part, they are pretty similar to the solo fights, except there might be a new mechanic for each of them that mixes things up a little. The fights are as follows:

They can be done in any order, so you don’t have to do them as listed above. Once you have completed all three battles, you will be able to access the main building, where you will battle Gilgamesh.
