Chapter 14 is the final chapter in the main story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, with it mainly consisting of a gauntlet of bosses. After vanquishing Jenova Lifeclinger, you’ll be confronted by Sephiroth, with the help of a special guest. When he has been put down, you will face Sephiroth Reborn, a long boss with many phases. You may think that’s the final boss, but there is one more, a rematch against Sephiroth, although you’ll be joined by someone else, in a two-on-one bout.
All of Sephiroth’s Attacks¶
Sephiroth will retain some of the attacks from the previous battle with him, but some of them will be enhanced. Refer to that fight for the intricacies on his normal melee combos. There are also some new moves, as well in this fight.
-
Grip of Fate: Unblockable. Sephiroth sends out a Whisper straight at one of your characters. If it hits you, then you’re bound and he’ll usually follow up with Skewer.
-
Skewer: Unblockable. Sephiroth teleports next to you and tries to stab you with his sword. If successful, you will be bound for a few seconds before being tossed away.
-
Errant Whisper: Unblockable. Sephiroth hits the ground, causing Whispers to explode out of the ground, underneath your character. Keep moving/dodging to avoid this attack.
-
Whisper Cannon: Sephiroth will shoot a beam of Whispers at you, turning and following you. His Wing becomes a target during this and if you destroy it (magical attacks), the attack will stop and he’ll become pressured.
-
Whisper Whirlwind: Sephiroth plants his Masamune into the ground, then summons a giant tornado made of Whispers, which will home in on your slowly. If you deplete the Masamune’s HP (magical attacks), the attack will stop and he will become pressured.
-
Wicked Augment: He seems to use this after recovering from being pressured. Doesn’t seem to really do much of anything, though, from looking at things.
-
Heartless Angel: Unblockable/unavoidable. Sephiroth will jump into the air and do some kind of attack that covers the arena, putting both characters’ HP to 1. Only seems to do this under a certain HP threshold, like maybe 60% or so.
-
Octaslash: Unblockable. Sephiroth will begin charging this attack at around 50% HP or so. Both his Wing and Masamune will be available to target. Destroy both to stop the attack, but you can destroy one to lower the attack power. If left alone, Sephiroth employs eight slashes that are hard to avoid on a character.
-
Octaslash Prime: Unblockable. A follow-up to Octaslash, where Sephiroth dashes through the character, then unleashes a bunch of sword slashes.
-
The End is Nigh: Used at low health. Sephiroth will summon a bunch of Whispers that create a barrier around the battlefield.
-
Tempus Finis: Immediately used after The End is Nigh. Sephiroth will shoot two Whisper beams (basically like Whisper Cannons) from his hands, in opposite directions. He will turn slowly while doing this and slowly lower his stagger gauge. You must stagger him or else it’s game over.
Sephiroth Final Boss Strategy¶
The final fight of the main story will have Cloud and Aerith teaming up against Sephiroth. While you will see new abilities during the course of the fight, he still functions mostly the same as during your fight where you had Zack and Cloud. You will still see Errant Whisper and Skewer as attacks, as well as some of the melee combos. One difference is that some of the combos he did in the previous fight have been enhanced, like the sword beams also sending out Whispers, making that series of attacks a little harder to completely avoid.
One of the first new attacks you’ll see is Grip of Fate, where Sephiroth shoots a Whisper at one of your characters. Should it connect, you’ll be bound for a few seconds and he’ll likely follow up with Skewer. The key to winning this fight without much trouble lies in the other new abilities you’ll see from him. Whisper Cannon will have Sephiroth shoot a large beam (made of Whispers, hence the name) at you. He will turn while doing this, basically tracking the target. The other move in question is called Whisper Whirlwind, where Sephiroth summons a giant tornado that will follow you.
Both of these attacks have something special to them, as a part of Sephiroth will become a target during them. The Wing (Whisper Cannon) and the Masamune (Whisper Whirlwind) can be attacked during them, but they are quite resilient to physical attacks. If you use magical skills, then you can deplete their health a lot quicker, which results in pressuring Sephiroth. When he recovers from being pressured, he will use something called Wicked Augment, but it’s unclear what this actually does, as there’s nothing visible that seems to change.
At some point, Sephiroth will attempt to charge up Octaslash, making both Masamune and his Wing targets. Destroy both to stop the attack, but just one will reduce the power a little bit. Either way, you definitely don’t want this to happen, as Octaslash is quite strong and is followed up by Octaslash Prime, which results in even more damage. The battle will truly take off at around 60-70% HP, which is when Sephiroth will begin using Heartless Angel. If you remember from the Reborn fight, this move will reduce your characters’ HP to 1, leaving them extremely vulnerable to getting KO’ed.
To make matters a little worse, Sephiroth is a lot quicker in this battle, so be ready with an item, or something like Pray or a Magnify/Cure combo. He will add Heartless Angel into the mix for the remainder of the fight, until you get him to low enough health. This will be when it’s do-or-die, as he starts with The End is Nigh, causing a wall of Whispers to surround the field. Immediately after The End is Nigh is used, Sephiroth will initiate Tempus Finis. He essentially produces two Whisper Cannons from his hands, in opposite directions, and will spin around while doing this.
You will also has some stray Whispers coming out of the ground, similar to Errant Whispers, but they seem to be random. While Tempus Finis is being used, your goal is to quickly try and stagger Sephiroth, but he will also reduce his stagger gauge during this maneuver. If enough time passes, he will do an Octaslash and Octaslash Prime combo that will deal 9,999 damage on the last hit, resulting in a game over. So, keep the pressure on Sephiroth by continually attacking, then spamming Focused Thrusts and hope you stagger him in time. Once you do, it should be an easy time depleting the rest of his HP and completing the fight.
That wraps up the main story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so sit back and watch the ending! After the credits are over, you will return to the game and unlock both Chapter Selection and Hard Mode. Don’t forget to save your game to a new file once you can, so you don’t have to do that boss gauntlet all over again. Hard Mode basically makes things more difficult, plus you won’t be able to use items and normal benches will only restore HP.
