Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Treasure Hunt: How to Find Hidden Treasure

By
Nathan Garvin

Chocobos are a much beloved recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, and while they primarily serve as steeds, they played a particularly prominent role in Final Fantasy VII. In the original game, chocobos were used to travel around the world map, as per the norm, but they could also be bred and raced for various prizes, and different colors of chocobo would allow players to traverse terrain to reach otherwise inaccessible areas, where some of the most powerful materia in the game was hidden. While the ultimate importance of chocobos remains to be seen in the remake trilogy, these lovable giant birds have gained yet another feather in their plume via the Treasure Hunt mechanic in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This page will explain how to find hidden treasure while riding chocobos.

(1 of 4) As you ride around on chocobos you’ll occasionally see question mark icons appear, indicating you’re near hidden treasure.

Chocobo Treasure Hunts in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

As mounts, chocobos are useful for getting around quicker and in some cases, reaching areas that are otherwise inaccessible on foot. But there’s another perk to riding chocobos in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - Treasure Hunts. While exploring, a question mark may appear near your chocobo’s head, indicating that hidden treasure is nearby. Fortunately, chocobos aren’t just capable beasts of burden (and providers of all-you-can-eat omelets!), they also have a keen nose for buried treasure.

When you see this icon appear over your chocobo’s head, press and hold the DualSense-DPad-Up button until a little arrow appears near the question mark icon, then look in the direction this arrow is pointing. Once you’re looking in the general direction of the treasure as indicated by the arrow, the location of the treasure will glow blue on the ground and a blue line will appear between you and your chocobo, making it extra easy to make your way over there. Not that this is usually hard, as the chocobo’s detection range of treasure isn’t very far. Just keep in mind that most aspects of this are timed, so if you can’t locate the treasure fast enough, you may have to repeat the aforementioned steps.

Once you’ve located the treasure, ride over to it and press DualSense-DPad-Down to “scour” the ground for treasure. If you’re in the right location, you’ll uncover said treasure. Most of the treasure you’ll find via treasure hunts is crafting materials, but some of it can be rather rare, saving you from farming it via stealing or morphing.
