Come to the Evening Meeting¶
Following the group’s success in stealing the cannon during The Lion’s Den, return to Zizka at the Devil’s Den and tell him you’re ready, you can then wait for him until evening for the meeting to begin. This is a good opportunity to take stock of your supplies, making sure you have
Bandages and
Marigold decoctions on you to heal yourself. Additionally, if you want to make life easier at the final stages of this quest, consider raising your Speech to 22+.
You’ll get a few choices during the evening meeting but they have no major bearing on how this will play out. Once everyone learns their role on the battle to come, time will fast forward and you’ll find yourself outside of Maleshov in the evening.
Speak with the Devil¶
Immediately you’ll be thrust into an important choice at the start of this objective as Dry Devil reveals the plan of torching Maleshov and thus, dooming the innocent villagers that reside there. You have the choice of stopping Dry Devil from enacting this plan, however, and doing so (along with another objective shortly after) will unlock the No Good Deed Trophy/Achievement. To do this, choose the following responses:
- No! I won’t murder the innocent!
- My family was killed in such a raid
- Let’s duel
(1 of 2) Refuse to torch the village if you want to get the No Good Deed Trophy/Achievement.
Refuse to torch the village if you want to get the No Good Deed Trophy/Achievement. (left), You then have to defeat Dry Devil in a duel. (right)
At this point, you’ll have to win the duel to stop him from torching the village (and this, preventing you from unlocking No Good Deed). The duel itself shouldn’t be too much of a problem, especially if your equipment is up to standards, for us, Dry Devil went down with three strikes of a Short Sword (a Knight’s sword). Win, and he’ll agree to go with your plan, lose, and you’ll have to go with Dry Devil’s brutal methods.
Open the First Gate¶
Regardless of whether you torched the village or beat Dry Devil in a duel, you’ll find yourself outside the castle. You’ll want to keep quiet here, so stick on a set of armor that isn’t as loud as your full armor (and make sure you have a weapon equipped) and climb the ladder to get inside. At this point, the second step for the No Good Deed Trophy/Achievement will take place, as you’ll need to open the gate without alerting anyone in the castle.
(1 of 2) Stay crouched behind this wagon and toss a rock at the wall to the left of the gate to lure that guard away.
Stay crouched behind this wagon and toss a rock at the wall to the left of the gate to lure that guard away. (left), Then after tossing a rock to the right to lure the other guard, creep between them to reach the gate and open it. (right)
This means you’re going to have to lure away the two guards that stand at the gate without alerting them, and this can be tricky, so be prepared to load the latest autosave should you fail. The easiest way of doing this is to crouch behind the wagon, toss a rock to the left of the gate to have that guard go over and examine that corner, then quickly toss a rock over towards the tent on the right but near the guard on the right.
When he goes off to examine it, while still crouched, go towards the gate and unlock it before the other one gets back and you should also unlock the No Good Deed Trophy/Achievement if you beat Dry Devil earlier.
Defeat the Enemies in the Outer Bailey and Engage in Covering Fire for your Friends¶
If you were going for the Trophy/Achievement above, then odds are you’re in light protection, so hang back a bit at the start here and only attack soldiers when your other allies are fighting them, they shouldn’t take too many hits to down. Once the reinforcements arrive, you’ll pour into the outer bailey and need to kill the lot of them. You have plenty of support here, so use it and don’t let yourself get surrounded. If you get struck a few times, be sure to bandage any wounds immediately and use a Marigold decoction if you lost some health.
Eventually, you’ll have to provide covering fire for your friends as you’re attacked from above. If you want to be completely safe, you can simply go and wait it out in one of the nearby tents, after a few minutes pass, a scene will trigger and advance the quest. If you want to speed this up though, take out a ranged weapon and shoot back while under cover.
(1 of 2) You can choose to hide in the tent for a few mins rather than engaging in ranged combat.
You can choose to hide in the tent for a few mins rather than engaging in ranged combat. (left), Attack the enemy while they’re focused on your allies. (right)
Once you regain control, follow your friends and take out the remaining soldiers here, the same rules as above apply, let your allies do most of the work and attack from behind to score some easy kills. There are a few ranged enemies you’ll need to deal with, so consider running up the stairs to make quick work of them.
Speak with Capon and Zizka¶
Once the main battle is over, go over and speak to Zizka or Capon and you’ll decide how you’re going to handle von Bergow, regardless of your choice here, you’ll have no choice but to negotiate to begin with. While it seems you have the upper hand, von Bergow has a trump card in the form of a hostage, that of Lady Rosa, and you’ll have to make a decision here.
The easiest method by far is to simply win the negotiation with von Bergow, but this will require you to have your speech skils at a respectable level. The choices you have are as follows:
Ransom would be a solution for both parties. (Hard Speech check)
- It’s time to change sides, Chamberlain. (Very Hard Scholarship check)
- No matter how many men we lose, you’ll die! (Very Hard Intimidation check)
- There’s no other way. We’re torching the tower! (this will prevent Lady Rosa’s romance later)
You must rescue Rosa without choosing to torch the tower if you wish to romance her later.
As you can see, the easiest method is to go for the Speech check, we passed it at Level 25, but with good reputation, you should be able to pass the check around 22+ and is by far the best outcome for this quest. Should you wish to forego diplomacy though, and choose violence, you will have a choice of going in with Henry alone to rescue Rosa. Doing so will keep the hopes of romance alive with her, but you’ll have some challenging battles in the castle as you make your way to the top.
Regardless of how you choose to settle the situation, it will end in the same way, von Bergow will surrender and Rosa will be safe. Zizka will tell you to come to Suchdol at your earliest convenience, leaving you here to plunder the fallen soldiers, ending the quest, and starting
Oratores.
