After Henry gets involved in the prank-war between the villages of Zhelejov and Tachov, he’ll be invited to assist in a more violent confrontation - the annual argument-turned-brawl over the pasture rights between the two villages. Will Henry’s might make right, at least for a year, or will he find a more enduring way of resolving this dispute? This page will provide a walkthrough for the side quest Battle of the Frogs and Mice in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Page Breakdown¶
Starting Battle of the Frogs and Mice¶
To start this quest, you’ll need to complete the quest(s) Frogs and/or Mice. Once you’ve pranked Zhelejov or Tachov, you can speak to either Innkeeper Prochek or Old Olbram, who will ask you to accompany them to the pasture for the annual dustup between the two towns. If you accept, this quest will be a lot shorter, but you can also try to forge peace between the two and find out who actually owns the pasture. For the former, pick the option “Fine, let’s go to the pasture.” and for the latter pick “Wouldn’t you rather make up?” and follow up until you get the objective to speak to Bailiff Thrush. We’ll cover the straight-forward fight route first, then get to the lengthier truth-seeking route after that, so skip ahead if needed.
(1 of 2) After completing “Frogs” and/or “Mice”, talk to one of the town’s leaders to start this quest.

Win the Battle in the Pasture¶
If you choose to accompany either Innkeeper Prochek or Old Olbram to the pasture, you’ll fast-travel there automatically where a group of villagers from Zhelejov, led by Old Olbram, will accost the villagers of Tachov, led by Innkeeper Pochek. You can succeed at a Speech check to convince one of your opponents that they’re uselessly fighting another man’s battles, and this will convince them to abandon the cause, shifting the odds in your favor.
Talk the odds in your favor or not and a brawl will eventually break out (even if you try to appeal for peace - it’s too late for that now), and you’ll have to help your side defeat the opposing villagers. There are a lot of foes here, and the key is to not lose the numbers advantage. If you talked an enemy away, this will be easier, but your best bet is to wait for the two sides to engage, find an enemy already focused on one of your allies, and beat them to a pulp. While distracted by your ally, you can just walk right up to your target’s flank and start swinging - don’t stop until they fall, wait for your stamina to recover, and repeat. You can’t target allies, so you don’t need to worry about friendly fire too much and the game will automatically lock-on to enemies. Once all your enemies have been knuckle-dusted, talk to the leader of your faction and the quest will end, earning you 90 groschen.
(1 of 2) Succeed at a Speech check and you’ll convince some workers that it’s not in their best interest to get beat up over someone else’s livestock.

Discover Who Owns the Pasture¶
Alternatively, if you want to settle this incessant feud once and for all, you’ll need to decline to travel to the pasture with Old Olbram or Innkeeper Prochek and instead head to Troskowitz and talk to Bailiff Thrush. He’s not terribly helpful - the dispute arose before his time and sort it out is not a priority, but if you pick the option “Von Bergow would reward you.” or succeed at a Speech check (“You’d finally have some peace.”) he’ll tell you about some chronicle that might have the answers… if you can decipher it. In order to gain access to the book, however, you’ll need to leverage your past deeds (when we picked the option, Henry mentioned helping with the nomads - presumably completing the quest Miri Fajta will suffice) or pass a Scholarship check.
Consult Brada’s Chronicle¶
Enter the barracks building (to the west of the tavern) and once inside take a left to reach the scribe’s office. Read a book on a lectern along the southern wall and flip through to the end to find some red text:
- “And if the people knew just one thing about him truly – Fecit ordinem in regione ope clavi ferrei.”
Henry can’t make out what it is, but it’s Latin, and red, so it must be important! Talk to Scribe Gaibl nearby and ask him to translate the text, then tell him the exact like you need translated - the Latin text above - and he’ll do so. Something about “bringing order to the region with the help of an iron nail”, which is enough to give Henry a lead.
(1 of 3) Talk to Bailiff Thrush and he’ll mention Brada’s chronicle,
Find the Nail in the Tree¶
Make your way to the pasture west of Tachov and you’ll find a search area. Head to the center of the search area (near where the objective marker is) and you’ll find an old oak tree. Investigate it very closely and you’ll find a nail sticking out of it - the game won’t highlight this nail, it won’t give you any clues you’re looking at the right tree, and the dark iron nail can blend into the tree texture rather well, so you’ll need to search diligently. When you find it, Henry will comment on neither the Tachovites or the Zhelejovite being pleased about the discovery that the pasture is split right down the middle.
You’re not able to return to Bailiff Thrush and tell him what you found, which will convince him to make an appearance at that upcoming pasture brawl to set things straight. Before you inform Bailiff Thrush, however, there’s a bit of trickery Henry can play if he favors one village over the other…
Choice: Move the Nail or Leave It¶
Just because Henry set out to find the truth doesn’t mean he has to accept it, or be a reliably relayer of said truth. When you find the nail in the oak tree in the middle of the pasture you’ll get the option to remove it. If you do, you can put it in a different tree on either the western edge of the pasture or the eastern edge, if you want to give control of the pasture to Tachov or Zhelejov, respectively. Unlike the first tree you had to find, these two trees are clearly marked on your map, so if you want to decide the pasture claim in favor of one town or another, just put the nail in the correct tree, then report back to Bailiff Thrush.
(1 of 3) Find the nail marking the boundary of the pasture in an oak tree in the middle of the pasture.
Settle the Pasture Dispute¶
When you’ve made your choice, report to Bailiff Thrush, then talk to either Old Olbram or Innkeeper Prochek and head to the pasture. The two villages will assemble only to be interrupted by Bailiff Thrush. When you get a chance to interject, pick the option “Isn’t it time to make up?” to avoid losing any reputation, then follow up with “Would you make up already?”.
If you gave the pasture to one town exclusively, talk to that town’s leader and they’ll give you 50 groschen for settling the dispute. If you gave the pasture to neither, Old Olbram and Innkeeper Prochek will chat about an opportunity to brawl squandered, but both are expecting that they’ll find new grounds for quarrel soon enough - gotta do something to break up the tedium of daily life, no?
(1 of 2) Depending on where you put the nail, you’ll either split the pasture, give it to Zhelejov, or give it to Tachov.
Depending on where you put the nail, you’ll either split the pasture, give it to Zhelejov, or give it to Tachov. (left), While you’ll get 50 groschen if you give the pasture to one of the towns, Bailiff Thrush will give you the book “Masters Studies I” if you split the pasture. (right)
If you split the pasture between the two towns, talk to Bailiff Thrush and he’ll give you the book Master’s Studies I, which boosts Scholarship when read - probably more valuable to Henry than the groschen either of the two town leaders offered up, You’ll also get the achievement Truce.
Finally, with that, the feuding questline between Tachov and Zhelejov is over.
