Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a game that prides itself on being a stickler for historical accuracy, making necessary concessions when it comes to making the game slightly less tedious or providing basic gameplay functions. One of these is the common courtesy of being able to save your progress, but as with many thing in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the process isn’t as straight-forward as in other games. This page will provide information on the various ways to save your game in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, including quest autosaves, sleeping in a bed and using Saviour Schnapps.

Page Breakdown

Saving in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Saving is usually a simple matter in video games - you press the button to open the menu and select the “save” option. If the game’s real fancy you can even name your saved game! In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, saving your game takes a bit more work. Similar to the older Resident Evil games, items typically have to be expended to save, and while these items aren’t nearly as scarce as Resident Evil’s Ink Ribbons, when you’re starting out and tackling your first few fights, exploring and questing post prologue you may feel this inability to save freely quite keenly. Generally speaking the only times you can save are:

  • When saving and quitting the game (creates an exit save)
  • By reaching quest checkpoints (including at the beginning and end of quests)
  • By sleeping in a bed (ideally one you own)
  • By consuming Saviour Schnapps

This page will discuss all these options, except for the exit save - that can be accessed from the menu, but since it’s a more or less temporary save (each exit save overwrites the last one), it also fails to provide the same utility you likely want out of saving your game.

(1 of 2) The game will automatically save at quest checkpoints,

The game will automatically save at quest checkpoints, (left), and when you “Save & Quit” an exit save will be made, although this will be overwritten the next time you Save & Quit. (right)

Quest Autosaves

The easiest way to save your game - at least in the early-going - is by advancing and completing quests. At various checkpoints during quests (major milestones, usually including when the quest begins and ends), the game will make an autosave. The problem is, quests usually involve combat, dialog checks, or other actions you probably don’t want to botch, so ideally you’d want a save before engaging in such activities. Still, it limits the amount of backtracking you have to do, even if it’s hardly an ideal way of making permanent saves.

Sleeping on a Bed

Sleeping on a bed you own - even for an hour - will save your game. This passes time and reduces your Nourishment by a trivial amount (as well as restoring Energy and Health), but if you can spare an hour you get a pretty painless way of making a permanent save. Just keep in mind that at night, most respectable NPCs will be asleep and guards will pester you if they find you out and about. If you’re not up to mischief, you should be in bed at night, so burning time is a negative side effect you should be aware of.

Another obvious downside is… well, beds are very ambulatory. If you don’t have a bed near where you want to save, you’ll need to waste time heading back every time you reload. Not ideal if you want to save scum quests or something similar.

You’ll unlock beds by progressing certain quests - you’ll have temporary access to a bed during the prologue, and working for blacksmith Radovan or miller Kreyzl during [Wedding Crashers] will also unlock a bed for your use. More permanent lodgings can be purchased from innkeepers - Innkeeper Lawrence northwest of Zhelejov will rent you permanent access to a bed for 120 groschen, for example. Note that innkeepers will only rent you beds if they have a high enough disposition towards you - if they think too little of you, they’ll refuse to rent you a bed.

When you find an inn, be sure to speak to the innkeep and see if they’ll rent you a bed. If not, try to buy and sell items to them, haggling generously until they like you enough!

(1 of 5) You’ll regain access to a bed by talking to the blacksmith or the miller during “Wedding Crashers”,

Saviour Schnapps Saves

The best option for saving is consuming Saviour Schnapps, a weak alcoholic decoction that primarily serves to save your game. These are sold by most merchants in the game (certainly alchemists and general store merchants will have some variety in stock) and depending on numerous variables they’ll set you back roughly 20-30 groschen. You drink it, the game saves, simple as that. If you want to save scum or make saves far from your base of operations, this is the way to do it.

There are some downsides - first, Saviour Schnapps are limited use items. Drink it and it’s gone. Second, lower-quality versions are mildly alcoholic, but you’d have to drink quite a few in a day to risk being severely debuffed due to drunkenness. Third, they cost money and have some small inventory weight, so buying and carrying around a ton may put a mild strain on your resources. Finally, if you want true safety and freedom to accumulate these wonderful potions, you’ll need to dabble in Alchemy… which might not be much of a downside considering [how useful Alchemy is], but to each their own.

(1 of 4) If you want to save anywhere, at any time, you’ll need Saviour Schnapps, which can be purchased from most merchants.

To craft Saviour Schnapps you’ll need 1x Nettle (a plant found generously around Troskowitz) and 2x Belladonna, which is rarer and riskier to find and harvest. To get around this, you can buy Dried Belladonna from most Alchemists for around 2 groschen each. If you’re capable enough at alchemy (the act, not the skill) you’ll brew 3x Saviour Schnapps each time you get these ingredients, which is a tremendous discount over buying them. If you get the Secret of Matter perks in the Alchemy tree you can get up to 6x Saviour Schnapps by brewing it correctly, and possibly superior versions that have less alcohol content, healing and stat buffs.

Simply put, if you want to save freely like in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, spend some time picking plants and brewing potions to level your [Survival] and Alchemy skills, buy Belladonna to make things easier, and when you’re cranking out 30x Saviour Schnapps at the expense of 20~ groschen and a bit of time spent on the alchemy minigame, your life will be much easier. It also doesn’t hurt that this will get you a [steady supply of early-game money] with which to rent beds, buy better gear and generally keep your coin purse heavy with silver.
