Starting the Troubadours Side Quest¶
After finishing the prologue and the Laboratores main quest, you’ll find yourself left to your own devices in Troskowitz, with a whole region to explore. Once you’ve got your bearings a bit, make your way to the Zhelejov Wagoner’s Inn, located west of Troskowitz (if you find Zhelejov first, the Inn can be found northwest of it).
Once you’re there, wait until the evening (consider getting a room while you’re here, it’s a useful location) and you’ll then encounter two individuals that happen to have had a few too many to drink. Sit down and speak with them and they’ll spin you a tale, eventually asking for your assistance in getting them a lute.
Get a Lute¶
Fortunately, you’re not completely in the dark as to where you may get your hands on a lute, as they mention that the carpenter in Troskowitz has one, only, you’ll need to take it without him noticing. You’ll want to make sure you have a few Lockpicks on you, and wear some clothing that makes you less conspicuous, leave the armor at home and stick to some dark threads if you can.
When you’re ready, return to Troskowitz and wait until it’s getting dark so that it’s easier to sneak around. You’ll find the carpenter’s house over on the east side of town so head there and then go around the back to find a shed you can climb on, this will allow you to reach a window you can climb through. As soon as you get inside, move very quietly (there’s likely someone sleeping to your left) and take the stairs down.
At the bottom, head through the door in front of you and continue forward through another door. This is a workshop, and if you look on the wall to the left, near the window, you’ll find the Lute that you can steal. Do so, quietly make your escape, and then return to Zhelejov Wagoner’s Inn to hand it over.
Unfortunately, a passerby just happens to break it by being heavy-handed and, if you fail the speech check, you’ll have to take part in a quick fistfight. Fortunately, the man is drunk and won’t put much of a fight, just beware not to beat him too hard!
Find Strings¶
Once again, your new “friends” will ask you for your assistance in acquiring some new strings so that the lute can be repaired. George will mention that a hunter, Vostatek, told him he made some strings for someone once, prompting a visit to him. If you’ve already completed the Lackey side quest for Vostatek, you’ll even mention that you know him already.
To reach him, fast travel to Vidlak Pond if you’ve been there before (it can be found by heading northwest from your current position) and, once there, head along the path to the east to reach Vostatek’s lodge. Speak with him and ask him if he’s able to help you, and he’ll mention that you’ll need to get your hands on some sheep’s guts, something you can do by hunting in the forests nearby. If you’ve yet to delve into it yet, check out our Hunting guide.
Alternatively, if you’re just not interested in a spot of hunting, and would rather pay your way through this step of the quest, you can always purchase the guts from a butcher, which just so happens to reside in Troskowitz. Go over to the eastern edge of town (beyond where the Tailor is) and you’ll find the Butchers where you can purchase some Sheep guts for as little as 0.1 Groschens a piece!
Return to Vostatek, hand over the guts, and he’ll fashion some strings out of them for you, all that remains now is to return to George and Michael at Zhelejov Wagoner’s Inn to hand them over and complete this step of the quest.
Pay Off the Debt to the Innkeeper¶
It seems they can’t leave for Kuttenberg just yet as they have the little matter of settling the debt with the Innkeeper first, of which they’ve racked up quite an amount. Go and speak with Lawrence and although you can pass a speech check to pay the debt off for them, it’s much easier (and cheaper) to quickly take care of the task yourself.
The sacks can be found to the right of the barn, pick them up one-by-one (there are eight in total) and haul them to the barn nearby, dropping them on the pallet. With that out of the way, head behind the back of the barn to find the privy along with a Spade, make sure you pick it up and then dig the spot to the right of it to complete that task too (don’t forget to take a bath after!).
Return to Lawrence to inform him the tasks have been taken care of, then let Michael and George know there debt is free. As thanks, they’ll compose a ballad for Henry and urge him to come and meet them in Kuttenberg once they’ve made their fame!
