Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Nourishment, Food and Food Poisoning

Maintenance is a large part of the gameplay loop in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - you need to keep Henry’s Health and Energy up (ideally by sleeping in a bed), and you need to keep his clothes and armor clean and in good repair. You’re spared the tedium of hydration and uh… waste management, but Henry still has to eat. The Nourishment stat tracks Henry’s sustenance level, and this page will discuss how to keep Henry’s belly full in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2!

Page Breakdown

Nourishment and Food

Like all living things, Henry needs food to survive, and this requirement is measured by the Nourishment stat, found in the Inventory and Player submenus, on the bottom right of the screen below Henry’s model. Maxing out at 100, the Nourishment stat will deplete the hungrier Henry gets, and it will continually deplete over time. Let it drop too low and Henry will sustain various debuffs, and he may even starve to death!

(1 of 2) Go without eating for too long, and Henry will suffer from the Hunger debuff.

Hunger Debuff

Once your Nourishment falls below 50% you’ll get the Hunger debuff, and Henry will start whining about being hungry. At first this debuff just reduces your Stamina, progressively lowering it further the more the Hunger debuff increases (and Nourishment decreases). At 0% Nourishment, Henry will start taking Health damage, although this is generally rather slow. If you consume anything that brings your Nourishment above 0, you’ll stop actively starving… at least temporarily.

Finding Food

Fortunately for Henry, food isn’t that hard to find - you can hunt animals (although this is considered poaching!), throw rocks at bird’s nests to get eggs, heck, even some herbs and potions provide Nourishment. Rugged self-sufficiency sounds fine and all on paper, but it’s not necessary, as it’s cheap enough to buy food from merchants, farmers and innkeepers - a few groschen will suffice to keep Henry fed, which you can scrape together by brewing up a single batch of potions and selling them. Get a little more ambitious and rent a room from an innkeeper and you’ll be able to indulge in the stew they cook there. This isn’t quite a limitless source of Nourishment, but each pot will provide over 100 Nourishment if you take multiple spoonfuls, which is considerably more than you’ll lose in a single day

Honestly once you are remotely comfortable brewing and selling potions - something you should achieve during the prologue - you shouldn’t have trouble getting enough food, and renting lodgings at an inn will further trivialize this necessity.

Freshness and Food Poisoning

Getting ahold of food is all well and good, but you won’t always be ready or willing to go back to town to haggle for food. When you’re on the road for an extended period of time, you’ll need to bring food with you. Before you munch down on some meat you have had stored in your pocket for the past few days, however, keep in mind that each food has a freshness stat. Starting at 100 Freshness, food will degrade over time, and the lower its freshness the higher the risk that you’ll suffer from Food Poisoning if you consume it. As a general rule, food should not be consumed when it hits 40 Freshness or lower - the red Freshness numbers should make this clear.

Food Poisoning will drain your Health while it’s in effect, and even a mild case of Food Poisoning will deal significant Health damage over time. To remove Food Poisoning you’ll either need to consume a Digestive Potion or wait it out.

(1 of 4) Be wary of food’s Freshness stat - if it gets too low,

Cooking, Smoking and Drying Food

Most food items are highly perishable, lasting around two to five days before being spoiled. Fortunately, however, you can prepare food in various ways to either increase its Nourishment, increase its shelf life, or both. Use stoves (located in most inns, near the complimentary stew) to cook food, smokehouses to smoke food and drying racks to dry food. Drying Racks are in almost every situation the best option, as dried food will functionally never spoil, making dried foods great for long trips.

(1 of 3) You can alter food’s properties by cooking it,

It’s also worth noting that poached meat counts as stolen, but once cooked, smoked or dried, it’ll lose this designation, giving you further incentive to process your food in some way or another. Just keep in mind that without purchasing certain perks, the Freshness of food you process will not improve. If you take boar meat at 75% Freshness and cook, smoke or dry it, it’ll still have 75% Freshness afterwards… even if it perishes slower from that point on.
