Follow Sir Hans’ Company

A few weeks on from the devastating battle at the castle, you’ll find yourself setting off on horseback with Hans Capon to deliver a message to Sir Otto von Bergow. Respond to his questions with any of the responses shown on the right of the screen, then you’ll come across a man named Captain Thomas. Unfortunately, the introductions start to go wrong so Henry (you) need to step in quickly to prevent any unnecessary bloodshed.

Selecting Your Playstyle

You’ll be presented with three dialogue choices: “I’m a soldier and Lord Capon’s bodyguard”, “I’m an adviser to a nobleman and an envoy” or “I’m the scout of our company”. We recommend selecting the option that matches up to your preferred playestyle, as it’ll give you some starting points in that particular trait. If you prefer overcoming challenges with combat, then you’ll want to select the top option, if you prefer working things out with words and knowledge then you’ll want to select the middle option and if you prefer to do things more stealthy than the third option is for you.

(1 of 2) The first choice you’ll make will give you some starting points for a specific playstyle.

Once you’ve introduced yourself to Captain Thomas he will then ask why he should trust you and you’ll be given another three choices: “As envoys we’re offering an alliance”, “Do we really look bandits to you”, or “As soldiers, we can help you with the bandits”. We recommend looking at your stats (shown above) and choosing a response based on your highest to increase your chances of success. We managed to pass this check by choosing the top option - As envoys we’re offering an alliance.

Find Out From Sir Hans What the Plan is

Once you’ve finished conversing with Captain Thomas, you’ll find yourself at a nearby bank for the night. Here you’ll need to talk with Hans but you’ll need to call over Mutt by holding Triangle on Playstation Y on Xbox and X on PC.

Find Something to Eat for Mutt and Feed Him

Mutt won’t quieten down until he has a full belly so head over to Oats who can be found overlooking the pot and speak with Oats to see if he’ll give up the last sausage. You can convince him by selecting “what would you swap that sausage for?” and he’ll tell you that will if you manage to acquire the ring he lost. Speak with Tankard who can be found nearby and beat him at a game of dice to acquire the ring. If you’re unsure of the rules, then be sure to check out our Dice page for tips.

Get Kitted Out With Armour and a Sword and Talk to Sir Hans

(1 of 2) Beat Tankard and at a game of dice and give the ring to Oats to acquire a sausage for Mutt.

Once you’re done playing Dice, head back over and give the ring to Oats to acquire the sausage, then feed it to Mutt before speaking with Sir Hans. Open up your inventory and equip the Training Sword then hop into the pen and speak with Hans once more to begin the duel. Here you’ll want to follow the instructions on the left of the screen to learn the basics of sword fighting, such as Chain Attacks, Blocking, Riposte and Changing Attack Zones.

Upon completing the necessary tutorials, put all the knowledge and beat Sir Hans at a duel to continue the quest. Head back over to the fire and partake in some chatter, then you’ll find yourself in the water for a much needed wash. However, Sir Hans has sensed that there are some women nearby, so you’ll want to crouch by pressing in the Right Stick on Console or C on PC and follow Hans until you come across one of them doing laundry.

Get Away with Sir Hans

You need to distract her so you can safely get past without being spotted, so throw a pebble in the opposite direction by pressing R1/RB/G and then quickly walk ahead until you trigger a cutscene. Unfortunately, both you and Henry don’t have any equipment so you need to try and navigate the woods undetected. Head southeast until you come across a group of bandits and then take the left path and district the single guard with a pebble to safely get across.

(1 of 2) Distract the woman with a pebble to get past unseen.

Distract the woman with a pebble to get past unseen. (left), and then do the same on the bandit to avoid him spotting you. (right)

Wait for the guards up ahead to walk away before continuing to follow Hans until you reach the top of the hill, then some bandits will spot you so you’ll need to sprint to the north until you reach a fork in the path. Speak with Hans and then work your way through the rocks and take the left path to find an escape point and then you’ll find yourself dueling against a bandit. You’re dangerously low on health, so you’ll want to avoid being too aggressive and instead only attack once after a successful block. Once you’ve defeated the bandit a cutscene will play out and then the next main quest Fortuna will begin!
