Starting the Ars Dimicatoria Side Quest¶
Head towards the Iron Eagle Tavern which can be found by walking southeast from the Kolin Gate in Kuttenberg Fast Travel Point and speak with Menhard van Frankfurt and accept his duel and once you’ve dealt enough damage a scene will play out. Select the dialogue towards “Menhard is of noble birth” and “Menhard didn’t break any laws” to prevent a fight breaking out and then visit the inn to the west of Kuttenberg to learn that he wants you to steal the Kutternberg Brotherhood’s Sword.
Steal the Kuttenberg Brotherhood’s Sword¶
Pass the time until nightfall and make your way over to the swordfighting hall which is situated in the southwest portion of Kuttenberg (southeast of Kouřimská Gate Fast Travel Point) and head down the alleyway to the right of the building and lockpick the back door. Go up to the second floor and enter the room on the right and sneak up to anyone inside and knock them out before collecting the sword which is hanging on the wall in the back right corner of the room.
(1 of 3) Head to the swordfighting hall
Exit the hall by taking the path you took to get in and fast travel over to Kuttenberg Town Hall, then wait for the guard leaning against the wall to move or throw a rock in the opposite direction before hanging the sword up on the wall. Head back to the inn and let Menhard know the job is done and then you’ll find yourself at the town hall witnessing another argument between the Germans and Kuttenbergers, but you’ll be given opportunities to respond towards the end and we recommend choosing “Menhard is right”.
Become a Member of the Swordfighting Brotherhood¶
If you want to participate in the tournament then you’ll need to swear an oath to join the Swordfighting Brotherhood, but this will require you to beat Arnae the German in a duel before you’re able to do so. The easiest way to win this duel if you aren’t very confident at duels is by playing more defensively by waiting for him to strike you first, parry and counter. Upon victory, swear and oath to the brotherhood and then it’s time to prepare for the battles ahead.
Compete Against the Kuttenbergers¶
We recommend using this opportunity to prepare by making sure you’ve completed both Combat Training I and Combat Training II as they will not only improve your skill level but teach you certain techniques such as Master Strike. Additionally, you’ll want to brew some
Artemisia Potions (Temporally Increases Strength) and Marigold Decoction (Regain Health). Inform Menhard that you’re ready and you’ll be automatically transported to the arena.
(1 of 2) Equip the tournament sword before beginning the duel.
Equip the tournament sword before beginning the duel. (left), Parry your opponent’s attacks before striking. (right)
The tournament will require you to defeat Cobbler Linhart, Butcher Emmeram and Master Nicholas of Prague in a duel consisting of two rounds. Linhart and Emmeram shouldn’t cause you much of a problem but Nicholas is fairly skillful so we recommend using the parry/counter tactic (like you did against Arnae) and weaving in a master strike when you see an opportunity.
Ars Dimicatoria Quest Rewards¶
Speak with Menhard once the tournament has ended and wait a few in-game days which you can either pass quickly or do some other things in the meantime, then head to the Swordfighting Hall and talk to him once more to bring the quest to a close and you’ll be rewarded with Master Menhart’s Longsword!
