After his near-death experience during the prologue, Henry finds himself doubting the skills he developed in the first game. After hearing about a master swordsman named Tomcat, Henry resolves to seek him out for some training - if for no better reason than to brush up on the basics and recover his confidence. This page will cover the side quest Combat Training I in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Starting Combat Training I¶
Immediately after the prologue, when Henry gets freed from the pillory, you’ll be hailed by a woman in red named Bara. Talk to her and she’ll mention Tomcat, starting this quest. Tomcat is, to hear Bara tell tale, some local folk hero of prodigious strength and considerably skilled in swordplay, and after the last few days Henry could use a refresher in the finer arts of combat. You’ll find Tomcat in the Nomad Camp near Rocktower Pond, which is west of Bozhena’s cabin, as the crow flies, but given the forest and cliffs in between, heading south from Bozhena’s cabin to find a road, then following said road northwest to the Nomad Camp is a better option. Or from Troskowitz, follow some roads southwest, then northwest to reach your destination.
Pass through the Nomad camp and seek out a fenced-off area near the quest objective. Master Tomcat is a mustachioed man of otherwise unremarkable appearance standing near the aforementioned pen. Talk to him and he’ll offer to train you, free of charge - Tomcat’s bored, and Henry desperately needs the pick-me-up, so everybody wins.
Train with Master Tomcat¶
Accept his offer to train, then jump into the arena and talk to Tomcat again. You don’t need to worry about your arms and armor for this fight, as you’ll just be performing some combos to learn them - you’re not expected to “win” anything.
First you’ll start out performing the “natural combo”, which is either or . Do this twice and you’ll be able to move on to the next lesson, but note Henry technically already knows this technique - they’re marked as the “Lower Left Strike” and “Lower Right Strike”, respectively. Performing it should give you no trouble, since swinging from the right will put your weapon to the left by default, and vice-versa, so you’re literally just spamming three horizontal swings.
Next you’ll need to perform a “Horizontal Slice”, which is . A bit trickier, since attacking from above puts your next attack to the left if you don’t press anything else, so you’ll have to be sure to switch to the right after the first overhead swing, but it’s a trivial adjustment to make. Land all three strikes two times and this training session will end.
You will learn the Mittelhaw combo for your troubles and Tomcat will tell you he can teach you more, but to learn the next technique, the “masterstrike”, you must defeat him in a sword duel. Your gear does matter for this duel, so if you’re fresh off the pillory, you might want to turn your attention elsewhere until you gear up a bit. Losing doesn’t cost you anything, however, so you can always try Tomcat and see where you stand. When you can defeat him in a duel you’ll be able to complete the followup quest [Combat Training II].
Before that, however, note that you can now use Tomcat as a skill trainer and a technique trainer. He’ll teach you Swordsmanship (Basic), Heavy Weapons (Basic), Polearms (Basic) and Unarmed (Apprentice) as far as skills go, and he can also teach you the Knee Strike (Sword), Shield Deflect (Shield) and Hammer (Unarmed) techniques. All of these services cost money.
