Rafael is a crew member that is easy to miss as he will only join you if you make the correct decision during a late-game main quest. He is one of the only characters with two outpost-related skills, and his kit makes him suited for tasks outside of combat, making him a rarer companion. Rafael can be hard to find, and many players don’t know how to best utilize him. The guide below goes over Rafael’s stats and how to add him to your crew.

Rafael Aguerro is found during the Entangled quest and will join you after you visit him at The Viewpoint in New Atlantis if he survives.

Rafael Starfield Companion Guide

"Rafael Aguerro" iconRafael Aguerro is rather unique as he isn’t one of the characters that you want to take with you into battle. In fact, we highly recommend another companion if you are looking for someone to explore the cosmos with you as Rafael isn’t built around combat. The chart below shows Rafael’s skills.

Skill Type
"Outpost Engineering" iconOutpost Engineering Rank I Science
"Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management Rank I Social
"Starship Engineering" iconStarship Engineering Rank II Tech

Rafael is best kept at an outpost or on your ship as a permanent crew member, as his "Starship Engineering" iconStarship Engineering Skill makes you more resistant to damage during dog fights. He has two separate outpost-related skills, "Outpost Engineering" iconOutpost Engineering which lets him make goods a bit easier, and "Outpost Management" iconOutpost Management which allows him to place additional "Cargo Link" iconCargo Links. These skills only work when he’s actively stationed at an outpost or part of the crew of your ship.

Where is Rafael’s Location in Starfield?

Rafael is a companion that is easy to miss. He pops up during an end-game story quest called Entangled. During this quest, you must move between two areas, and choose which one to save at the end. There is a complicated way to save both as well. Regardless of this you can only have Rafael join you if you choose to save his reality or save both realities. If you choose to save both, he will be sitting in the lab at a table and will move to "New Atlantis" iconNew Atlantis the next time you visit.

If you choose to just save his reality, then you will need to fight your way back to your ship along with him. From there, you can land on any planet, and he will make his way to New Atlantis. You can find him at The Viewport up from the New Atlantis Spaceport. He’s sitting at a table right as you walk in, and as soon as you speak with him there, you can ask him to join your crew and pick his station.

Can You Romance Rafael?

No, Rafael isn’t a romance option, so you won’t need to worry about raising his affinity if you do decide to travel with him. As stated above, Rafael is made to be a companion that helps with your ship or outpost, not one that follows you around and forms a deep bond. If you are looking for romanceable companions, then you will need to spend time with some of the members of Constellation.

Starfield is an action role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios set in a futuristic interpretation of space exploration and colonization. Earth has long been abandoned, but there are plenty of other planets in different star systems where humans have ventured and settled. You have the freedom to create your own character with a unique background, but the main story will take you through a series of adventures as you uncover more information about mysterious artifacts which create gravitational anomalies. Along the way, you can build and customize your own space ship, establish your own outpost, befriend and romance new companions, and more. As a Bethesda game, you can also expect to see a lot of creative mods which have the potential to change your experience of the base game, or take it in an entirely new direction.
