Starfield

What is Starfield New Game Plus?

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

As with a lot of RPGs these days, Starfield has opted to implement a New Game Plus (NG+ for short) system into the game. This means that following completing the main quest storyline, players will begin an NG+ playthrough. Chatter amongst the Starfield player community suggests that the game gets really good in New Game Plus. But what does that even mean? This page is here to tell you all you need to know about the New Game Plus system, including how to get there and what you get as a reward!

How to Get New Game Plus in Starfield

In order to get NG+ in Starfield, all you need to do is beeline it through the main story quest, which is surprisingly short for an RPG these days. It takes an estimated 20-30 hours to complete the main quest, but if you really sped through dialogue and didn’t stop to loot and explore, we reckon you could shave another 5 hours off that estimation.

The Main Quest storyline follows the Constellations pursuit of artifacts.

You’ll then get to a point of no return (we won’t spoil it here!) in the main quest and then when you do the “thing”, you’ll start out in NG+!

What Happens in Starfield NG+?

So what exactly happens when you finish the main quest? Well, you’ll get to keep your skills, abilities and levels, meaning your hard-earned skill tree points will stay in tact and there’s no skill cap! You also get to keep the Powers you’ve unlocked during the Main Quest.

But on the flip side, you’re going to lose your whole inventory, including gear and credits. You’ll also lose your outpost bases and ships. And perhaps most importantly, you’ll also reset all questlines, both main quest and faction, and any exploration you’ve done in space is also lost.

So what is the point of New Game Plus? Why should players want to lose all their hard-earned gear and ships?!

Spoiler blocking picture! Read on at your own risk!

As a reward for reaching New Game Plus, players will start with the "Starborn Guardian" iconStarborn Guardian ship and the "Starborn Spacesuit Astra" iconStarborn Spacesuit Astra. The suit is uber powerful and has maxed out resistances to all damage types as well as environmental resistances.

The "Starborn" iconStarborn Guardian ship is pretty decent (though if you’ve become a spaceship buff you may have already created better ones!), with room for 5 crew members and 1,045kg of cargo room. It has some decent weapons but you can definitely get way stronger ships by purchasing upgrades.

In addition to these generous rewards, you’ll also unlock more temples and you’ll get to upgrade your existing powers when you’re in NG+. There are 24 powers to collect, so if you’ve already got a specific Power and you find it again in an NG+ temple, you’ll get an upgraded “II” version of that power (III in your second NG+ playthrough etc). Chances are you won’t have collected all the powers in your first playthrough so you’ll also increase your chances of finding different powers in NG+ too.

As mentioned, your questlines all get reset in NG+ so it’s also a great opportunity to try out new factions or do some things differently, all in the same save. You’ll also find there are a few new dialogue options relating to your NG+ character, and NPCs will comment on your cool gear and ship.

Each time you complete an NG+ your starting rewards get better (up to a point) - if you’re looking for more information (spoilers of course!), check out this reddit thread for information from a guy who’s completed 10 NG+! You can also check out this reddit thread for a breakdown of each tier of Starborn armor and spaceships that you’ll get for every NG+ you complete. A special thanks to the Starfield community for speedrunning so far so quickly!

Starfield is an action role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios set in a futuristic interpretation of space exploration and colonization. Earth has long been abandoned, but there are plenty of other planets in different star systems where humans have ventured and settled. You have the freedom to create your own character with a unique background, but the main story will take you through a series of adventures as you uncover more information about mysterious artifacts which create gravitational anomalies. Along the way, you can build and customize your own space ship, establish your own outpost, befriend and romance new companions, and more. As a Bethesda game, you can also expect to see a lot of creative mods which have the potential to change your experience of the base game, or take it in an entirely new direction.
