After dealing with witch hunters, treacherous merchants, a godling-haunted oneiromancer, and a collection of Dandelion’s past and present fixations, you’ll finally get a solid lead as to Ciri’s movements in Novigrad… and it leads you to the rotten heart of Novigrad’s criminal underworld. This page will provide a walkthrough for the main quest Get Junior in The Witcher 3.
Quest Objectives¶
Starting Get Junior¶
This quest will begin automatically after you finish Broken Flowers, but to get things moving properly you’ll need to make your way to Sigi Reuven’s bathhouse north of Hierarch Square. You should note that while this quest isn’t super complex on its own, a lot of other quests tie into this one - you’ll likely start several new quests while finishing this one, and these distractions can create the illusion of complexity. To help dispel that pernicious illusion, we’ll mention when these quests start and how much attention you should pay to them, but most of the quests that branch off of Get Junior can be ignored until you’re done with this quest.
Talk to Sigi Reuven at the Bathhouse¶
Make your way north of Hierarch Square to find Sigi Reuven’s subterranean bathhouse. Knock on the door and after a scene say whatever you wish to get inside. Deposit your clothes and follow Happen the Eunuch into the bowels of the bathhouse to find Sigi Reuven in the company of two other crimelords. You’re familiar with the King of Beggars, but proper introductions to a third mobster, Clever, will be put on hold, as some intruders break into the bathhouse and attack.
Clad in a towel and armed with a mace you’ll have to do battle with a mob of Whoreson’s Henchmen (Lv12), but you’ll have plenty of help and Quen is better defense than your armor. Kill the attackers and you’ll get more dialog - again, say whatever you wish and Cleaver will leave, asking you to meet with him when you get serious about striking back at Whoreson Junior, starting the quest Gangs of Novigrad. We’ll cover that shortly, but of more immediate concern, your conversation with Sigi Reuven - aka Sigismund Dijkstra - will fill you in on Whoreson’s strongholds before suggesting he might help you find Dandelion if you help him with something. The dialog option “Maybe I can help… Whaddaya need?” will start the main quest Count Reuven’s Treasure. You’ll need to complete both Get Junior and Count Reuven’s Treasure to unlock the next main quest The Play’s the Thing, but you don’t need to start Count Reuven’s Treasure now if you want to focus on Get Junior. On the other hand, if you want to, you can complete the entirety of Count Reuven’s Treasure right now if you wish - doing so won’t affect Get Junior in any way.
Exhaust Dijkstra’s dialog options and you’ll end up with three objectives: You need to search Whoreson Junior’s hideout, his casino, and his arena, but before that you should consider the secondary quest Gangs of Novigrad, which can influence the upcoming phase of Get Junior.
Gangs of Novigrad and Get Junior¶
The quest Gangs of Novigrad is a secondary quest and hence completely optional, but you can’t avoid starting it, and if you ignore it, it’ll fail when you advance Get Junior. This quest is functionally an accessory to Get Junior, giving you some narrative justification for just storming Whoreson’s arena and casino… as well as some dwarven muscle to help you raid these locations. If you don’t mind failing the quest, you can just ignore it and go about infiltrating the arena and casino, but talking to Cleaver, accepting his help and leading his henchdwarves into battle will net you 50 EXP and 300 Crowns if you raid both locations, or 150 Crowns if you only raid one. Check out the linked page for more details, but if you want to keep nasty red marks out of your quest log you’ll need to complete Gangs of Novigrad, which will also complete the arena and casino objectives for Get Junior. See the linked page for more details on this quest.
Visit Whoreson Junior’s Casino¶
To find Whoreson’s casino, head northeast of Hierarch Square, the building where the casino is located is just southwest of Oxenfurt Gate. If you want to advance Gangs of Novigrad, find Cleaver’s henchdwarves clustered down the street from the casino, inform them it’s time to attack, then kill everybody in the casino. Not the most elegant solution, but it works. Go up to the third floor, talk to a captive halfling named Rico and free him to start the secondary quest Honor Among Thieves, and you’re done with the casino.
If you want to be more subtle in your approach, however, approach the entrance to the casino where you’ll find two Bouncers (Lv12). Talk to them and either pick a fight by saying “Going in, over your dead bodies, if necessary.”, pay them 200 Crowns to get inside (you’ll earn 20 EXP in the process) or use Axii to convince them to let you in for even more EXP and without spending a Crown. Note that if you pick a fight here the whole casino will turn hostile and you’ll have to fight your way through, and in this case you might as well just get Cleaver’s henchdwarves to help you out - at least you’ll get paid for the bother this way. Also you can Axii the Bouncers, then return to Cleaver’s henchdwarves if you want to score a bit of extra EXP before indulging in slaughter.
Play Gwent in the Casino¶
Assuming you get inside without starting a fight, talk to a Dealer behind the counter, but do not mention Whoreson Junior. Whoreson is paranoid and has passed the word down the ranks, and if his minions so much as suspect that you’re looking for their boss, they’ll attack. Anyways, the dealer will mention you can gamble upstairs, so head up there to find three Gwent Players, whom you can talk to and eventually challenge to a game of Gwent.
There are three opponents you can challenge. One to the south has a rather tough Monster deck, capable of putting up big numbers with its Arachas, Vampire and Crone cards, all of which have the “Muster” ability. The players to the west and east field easier Nilfgaardian and Scoia’tael decks, respectively - although you should expect the Nilfgaardian player to field a few 10-Strength cards, while the Scoia’tael deck relies on late-game “Medic” cards and weather effects. You can bet 50-100 Crowns against the east and west Players while the southern Player always rewards you with 100 Crowns if you win. Win any two matches for a gain of 200 Crowns and you’ll be “invited” upstairs to partake in a special big stakes game for high rollers.
This is, of course, a trap, and rather than accepting that you’re just lucky, or skilled, or have better cards than the opposition, they’ve decided to label you a cheater and sink you into the Pontar. If you take this route you’ll have to immediately fight the Dealer (Lv11) and two Bandits (Lv12) in a rather small room. Be ready to dodge repeatedly to avoid the incessant attacks that will be aimed at you, using Quen to absorb the odd mistake - Tawny Owl can help keep your Stamina up, if you’re struggling. While the two Bandits are durable, the Dealer is actually a skilled swordsman inasmuch as he’ll parry and counter attacks if you swing blindly, so use Axii to cause him to lower his guard, try to get behind him, or counter his own attacks - all of which are easier to do when he’s the only foe left.
Defeat all three foes, then talk to Rico to gain some intel on Whoreson Junior. Be sure to free him by picking the option “Run.” when it shows up and the quest Honor Among Thieves will begin. Now you just need to murder your way through the casino and escape outside - be sure to loot a chest on the third floor to obtain Princess Xenthia’s Sword, a relic-quality steel sword. Once everything is dead and looted, exit the building. One down, two to go.
Visit Whoreson Junior’s Arena¶
At the end of the road to the north of the casino you’ll find Whoreson Junior’s arena, and it should be noted that you can complete the casino and arena in any order. If you talked to Cleaver and accepted his help you’ll find a gang of henchdwarves waiting down the street from the arena. Talk to them and give the word to raid the arena alongside them, but be wary, as there are many more enemies in the arena than the casino, and there’s almost no chance your henchdwarves will survive. Their survival doesn’t affect either quest, but their likely demise will make it likely you’ll end up fighting numerous enemies at once, and all in all the arena is more difficult with the henchdwarves than without.
If you prefer to infiltrate, you’ve got some options. First, just south of the entrance to the arena is the Nowhere Inn, and along the northern edge of this inn you’ll find a man named Zdenek fight some Bandits. When Zdenek inevitably dies, loot him for a Certificate ,which you can present to the Bouncers outside of the arena to get in. Failing that, you can always bribe the Bouncers (100 Crowns - 10 EXP) or use Axii. As usual, using Axii is the most rewarding route, and if you want to double dip you can Axii your way past the Bouncers, then return to Cleaver’s henchdwarves and lead them into battle.
Assuming you get into the arena peacefully, advance through the sewer until you find a man named Igor seated on a throne. Do not bring up Whoreson Junior and seek employment and Igor will decide to test your mettle by making you fight in the arena. Agree to his demands but note that once you enter the arena you will not be able to raid the arena with Cleaver’s henchdwarves, failing that objective and forfeiting half the reward for Gangs of Novigrad, although you’ll gain spoils from the arena that you wouldn’t otherwise obtain.
Fight in the Arena¶
Agree to fight in the arena and you’ll be teleported there via the magic of cutscenes. Here you’ll have to win a series of straight-forward battles - you can use signs, bombs, oils, potions, whatever you wish. Once all the enemies are dead you’ll get a bit of time before the next round begins. First you’ll face off against Gustav Roene (Lv12), a warrior who can easily be countered and attacked. Reduce his health to 50% and he’ll submit. The crowd demands blood, but if you decline to kill Gustav he’ll join you for the rest of your time in the arena. This likely just defers his demise, so do what you wish. On the downside, if you spare Gustav you’ll have to kill three Dogs (Lv9).
Next you’ll have to fight two Skellige-born Warriors (Lv12), one armed with a two-handed axe and the other with a spear. Strong attack + dodge should suffice here, maybe with a little bit of Quen to absorb accidents. Kill them both and next you’ll have to dispatch a Wyvern (Lv11) followed by a pair of Endrega (Lv10 and Lv12), both of which Geralt is uniquely capable of dispatching. Finally you’ll need to dispatch Boris (Lv11) a bear - use Igni to set it on fire and let it burn for heavy damage-over-time and use the ol’ strong attack + dodge combo to cut the beast down.
Smite all the foes arrayed against you and after a scene you’ll have to fight four of Whoreson’s Henchmen (Lv9-11), Igor (Lv13) and a Guard Dog (Lv12). This is similar to the last fight you’d have had if you raided the arena with Cleaver’s henchdwarves save there are far fewer enemies, you’ve got a larger area to fight, and there are no archers. Altogether this should make this battle easier, even if any of the henchdwarves managed to survive long enough to make it to the alternative. Use Axii to hopefully score a coup-de-grace on the shield-bearer and the strong attack + dodge combo on Igor - the rest of the foes aren’t particularly difficult.
Search the Arena¶
Once Igor is dead - whether you raided the place with Cleaver’s henchdwarves or fought in the arena doesn’t matter - search his body to find Igor’s Key. This will open a small chest near Igor’s throne that contains a Message from Igor, which mentions the location of Whoreson Junior’s treasure. Whether you get the letter or not doesn’t matter, you’ll want to exit the arena by heading east, then search the wall to the east of the arena gate to find a secret door, some ruts on the floor and a suspicious torch on the nearby wall. Interact with the torch to open the door, then search a chest at the end of the chamber to find a chest containing a Mysterious Letter. Read it to gain more intel about Whoreson Junior, at which point you’ll be done with the arena. If you didn’t use Cleaver’s henchdwarves to raid the arena you’ll encounter some of these dwarves fighting the remnants of Whoreson Junior’s goons as you leave.
Visit Whoreson Junior’s Hideout¶
The final location you need to search is Whoreson Junior’s hideout, and compared to the arena and casino, the hideout is rather anticlimactic. Cross St. Gregory’s Bridge to reach Novigrad’s northernmost island and enter the marked house to find that it’s full of Cleaver’s henchdwarves. They already massacred everybody inside, and if you talk to one on the ground floor, it doesn’t sound like they accomplished all that much in the process. To finish this place off, use your Witcher senses to find the follow points of interest:
- Some papers and books in the middle of the floor on the first level.
- Some clothes near a tub on the second floor.
- Some torture implements hanging on the eastern wall on the second floor.
Loot the hideout, then leave. Assuming you’ve searched all three locations, report back to Dijkstra and tell him what you’ve discovered about Whoreson Junior, and at length he’ll refer you to Vernon Roche - a character Geralt met during The Witcher 2.
Talk to Vernon Roche and Meet with His Redanian Contact¶
Most of the meat of this quest is now done, but there’s still a bit of combat left and a good bit of chatter ahead. First you need to meet up with Vernon Roche, who can be found at the Temerian Partisan Hideout north of Oxenfurt. Make your way there, talk to Vernon Roche, tell him why you’re here, and he’ll tell you to meet him near Oxenfurt.
Travel back to Oxenfurt - the Novigrad Gate is a good fast travel location, you just need to head east from here to find Vernon waiting for you near a bridge. Talk to Vernon and go meet his contact, who turns out to be somewhat higher up on the Redanian hierarchy than either were expecting. Pick whatever dialog options you want and you’ll find out where Whoreson Junior is… but the information wasn’t free, and an unspecified favor is expected in return at a later date. Before parting company with you, Vernon Roche will also ask for a favor, starting the quest Eye for an Eye. There’s no need to rush this yet, however, it’ll be a while before it fails, so let’s stay focused on Get Junior.
Find Whoreson Junior in His Oxenfurt Hideout¶
Enter Oxenfurt proper and head over to the Western Gate, which is along the southwestern edge of the city. Whoreson Junior’s hideout is just northeast of here, and it shouldn’t be too hard to spot the location as two of Whoreson’s Henchmen are outside. Pick a fight with them (Lv11) and cut them down, then loot them for a Key to Whoreson Junior’s Estate which will unlock the doors to the grounds of the estate.
Open the door and head into the estate grounds to find them crawling with more Whoreson’s Henchmen (Lv10-12), none of which are remotely dangerous aside from one crossbowman. Hunt the archers down, then kill the rest - we went up some stairs along the southern edge of the estate and just used the reliable strong attack + dodge combo until they were all dead. There are bound to be a few stragglers near the mansion to the east and more inside - cut through them and head upstairs to find Whoreson Junior cleaning up after his ghoulish pastime.
Pick whatever dialog options you wish and you’ll have to play through Ciri’s Story: Visiting Junior before you’re able to finish up Geralt’s interrogation of Whoreson Junior.
Choice: Kill or Spare Whoreson Junior¶
After learning about Whoreson Junior’s encounter with Ciri you’ll get the option to kill the degenerate or spare him. Pick the option “You gotta die.” to kill him or “Refuse to sully myself with your blood.” to spare him. This will come up again later, although it’s not a materially consequential choice. Check out the spoiler box below to find out what happens later with each choice.
Regardless of what choice you make regarding Whoreson Junior, you won’t have to deal with him again until much later in the game. Eventually however you’ll have to meet with Whoreson Junior again during the quest [Payback]. If you let him live you’ll find him begging on the streets of Novigrad, now the object of abuse for street urchins. On the other hand if you killed him, you’ll find him apparently alive and well in Novigrad running a legitimate business… only to find out that the Doppler Dudu is impersonating Whoreson Junior. Aside from using Axii on some guards if you kill Whoreson Junior, there’s no material difference between these two choices.
Make your choice after which the quests ends, netting you a whopping 500 EXP. Leave Whoreson Junior’s estate and you’ll be approached by some Redanian Soldiers who take you to see Radovid, staring the quest A Favor for Radovid.
Quests "Get Junior" and "Gangs of Novigrad" can be completed in parallel without failing any of the subquests.
After the first conversation with Cleaver, you need to refuse his offer, then go to the hideout, complete this task. Next, go to the Arena, where the dwarfs must kill Zdenek, from whose body you need to pick up a letter that you can use on the guards (yes, you will not get experience for Axii, but you will get a green checkmark, it's up to you). ATTENTION! At this stage, no dialogue can mention Whoreson, and that you are looking for him, choose neutral answers. After winning the arena choose "Thanks", don't ask anything, and after clearing the area, you MUST NOT read the letter you pick up from the crate in the secret room. And make sure the dwarfs don't get killed.
After that return to the Cleaver and accept his offer and only after go to the casino, but DO NOT TALK to the dwarfs near, you can use the Axii to enter the casino, and again, do not mention Whoreson. Go to the casino, beat two players, and then find yourself in the interrogation room. Kill the attackers and DO NOT TALK to the halfling. And another important point, you must leave at least one enemy alive, you can freeze him with a bomb or you can stun with Aard. Leave him, run out of the casino to the dwarves and call them for help, run back, where the enemies will respawn. Cut out everyone, and ONLY AFTER THIS, talk to the halfling, and let him go, exit the casino, and only now you can read the note, that you take at the arena.
Go collect the reward from Beggar and Cleaver, Cleaver will give less orens, because you did not help in the arena, but you will recieve the same amount of experience. After that, continue the quest "Get Junior" as described in the guide, but after talking with the king, when you approach the guards, choose the option about girls and "I'm new here." You will be pointed to a secret passage through which you will enter the Estate, (it's where we take "Enhanced Feline Trousers" diagram earlier).
Funny, after you get to the Estate from the passage, you can go to the locked gates and "activate" dialogue with guards again.. and choose another option this time if you want. :)
