The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Most Truest of Basilisks

By
Nathan Garvin

Man has always had a morbid fascination with death and danger. In a world with monsters, they’d doubtlessly end up in zoos, where we could safely pay to gawk at such creatures, satiating this dark curiosity with the comfort of knowing we’d likely not be the least bit inconvenienced by it. Humans in the world of The Witcher aren’t much different, and when a captive monster caged by an incompetent conman draws a crowd, the need for a Witcher can’t be far away. This page will provide a walkthrough for the secondary quest The Most Truest of Basilisks in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Quest Objectives

Starting The Most Truest of Basilisks

Another fairly obscure quest, bereft of a journal entry and only marked by a yellow exclamation point on the map when you get close. Exit Oxenfurt via its eastern gate (Novigrad Gate) and follow the road/bridge out of the city to the northeast, where you’ll spot a crowd gathered just northeast of the bridge. Approach and this freeform quest will begin, but once you’re close you need to commit, as it may not persist if you leave and return.

(1 of 2) Approach a crowd on the outskirts of Oxenfurt,

Approach a crowd on the outskirts of Oxenfurt, (left), to find they’re gawking at a captive Wyvern - which is being promoted as a Basilisk by the conman running the attraction. (right)

Defeat the Wyvern

Approach the mob and Geralt will comment on the captive “Basilisk”, which the huckster behind the attraction takes as an invitation to expound on the exotic and fantastical nature of Basilisks. Unfortunately for the conman, Geralt is a professional monster slayer, so not only does he know the true origin of Basilisks - which has nothing to do with homosexual cockerels or writhing masses of venomous snakes. More importantly, Geralt knows the difference between a Basilisk and, say, a young, malnourished Wyvern.

Upon this revelation, the crowd will turn on the conman. They were willing to gawk at a Basilisk, with its sordid past, but a Wyvern? Why, that’s just a big lizard with wings! As if on cue the captive Wyvern (Lv10) breaks free and attacks. This isn’t a normal Wyvern encounter - this poor specimen starts the fight injured, with roughly a third of its health gone. More than that, it’s surrounded by Redanians Soldiers. They might not be armed with silver, but steel still hurts and they’ve got numbers. Honestly Geralt probably doesn’t need to get involved at all, and the soldiers can get in the way and mess up your rhythm. The Wyvern, for its part, will usually try to aggro Geralt, so keep Quen up just because of how unpredictable the soldiers can make things and rely on the standard strong attack/dodge combo. The Wyvern likely won’t fly save to perform its claw rake attack, so this fight shouldn’t be all that difficult, soldiers aside.

(1 of 3) Predictably the creature escapes,

When the Wyvern dies you’ll get 25 EXP and can loot the monster for parts. Better yet, loot some parcels on a nearby wagon - the guards won’t mind!

In the wake of the assassination of Foltest, king of Temeria, the north have been rent by warfare as Nilfgaard launches its third major invasion, and the northlands have been united under the insane king Radovid. Overshadowing these petty politics is the mysterious return of Ciri - Geralt’s adopted daughter, who is now being pursued by the Wild Hunt.
