In the world of The Witcher 3, even the relatively trivial malcontent of the dead can affect the living. Case in point, when a mysterious old woman near Blackbough asks a wandering Witcher to help exorcise her deceased husband in the quest Last Rites. This page will provide a walkthrough the secondary quest Last Rites in The Witcher 3.
Quest Objectives¶
Starting Last Rites¶
This quest can be somewhat tricky to start, as it’s one of the few quests in the game that’s time sensitive. To start Last Rites, cross the bridge north of Blackbough to find an Old Woman standing on the northeastern side of the bridge. Catch is, she’ll only appear at night, so rest until around 11:00 PM before you head to the area. If you rest near the bridge, she might not appear when you’re done meditating, but inversely if she’s there (look for the yellow exclamation point on your map) she’ll remain even if you rest until daylight. Odd.
When you get the Old Woman to appear, talk to her and she’ll tell you that the ghost of her dead husband, Jackamar, haunts her dreams. She’s not willing to join Jackamar in the grave before her time, but leaving her ring on his tombstone might be a more palatable way to assuage the spirit. Problem is, the woods are dangerous, but a strapping Witcher has little to fear. Exhaust the Old Woman’s dialog options and despite the discrepancy in her timeline, agree to help out by saying “I can do it.” to start the quest.
Leave the Ring on Jackamare’s Grave¶
After you accept, the Old Woman will show that she’s still spry enough to vanish without a trace. Odd. Cross the bridge southwest and at a fork turn north to follow a trail into the woods. Continue north and you’ll eventually reach a graveyard just north of the Pellar’s Hut - if you’re visiting the Pellar during the quest Family Matters you’ll need to give the place a wide berth to avoid getting dragged into events near the Pellar’s Hut.
When you arrive, a search area will pop up. Activate your Witcher sense and look for the glowing red grave - an aged, humble structure along the trail northwest of the center of the search area. Examine the grave, then interact with it again to leave the ring, whereupon you’ll gain a minor EXP boost and you’ll see swirling motes of light. Equip and use the Magic Lamp to witness a ghostly reconciliation and gain a second, largely EXP boost. Nice.
Collect Your Reward¶
Geralt’s good deed for the day is done, time to visit the Old Woman in Blackbough to collect your reward. You’ll find her house just east of the Blackbough signpost, but you won’t find the Old Lady, instead you’ll find a woman named Lessy busily sweeping the dirt outside the hut. Talk to her and say “I delivered the ring.” and she’ll make a startling revelation. Despite the unusual situation, Lessy was raised right and will reward you by giving you 20 Crowns for helping her gran. You’ll get another EXP reward and the quest will end.
