The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Truth is in the Stars

By
Nathan Garvin

Prophecy plays a significant role in The Witcher 3, with Ciri’s birth, powers and struggles being foretold by Ithlinne’s Prophecy. While rare, it’s not surprising the odd seer can be found, offering snippets of fatalistic wisdom… but conmen are much more common, and gibberish can all too easily pass as wisdom to the untrained ear. This page will provide a walkthrough for the secondary quest The Truth is in the Stars, where you’ll be tasked with meeting a soothsayer’s demands in exchange for a foretellin’.

Quest Objectives

Starting The Truth is in the Stars

A simple enough quest to start, all you need to do is talk to a soothsayer in Benek a village along the southeastern edge of Velen. This is one of the characters you need to defeat in a Gwent match for the quest Gwent: Velen Players, although you need to start the quest [Family Matters] before this aforementioned Gwent quest can start. It’s also worth noting that he’s referred to as a “soothsayer” in the Gwent Quest, but the character is simply called an “Old Sage” in game.

Anyways, find him along the western edge of the village and talk to him and pick the option “Got some food. to meet the seer’s pedestrian demands. What food you actually end up giving him, if any, isn’t clear, but it’s unlikely you don’t possess any nommies by this point in the game. Give him what he wants and you’ll get a foretellin’ worth the price, which is to say, not much. When Geralt complains the Old Sage will muse that his third eye might become clearer if you bring him some dragonsroot from a nearby care. Pick the option “See what I can do.” to start this quest.

Give the Old Sage in Benek some food to get a reading, and when Geralt isn’t impressed he’ll be tasked with fetching some Dragonsroot.

Find the Dragonsroot

To find the cave you seek, follow the road southeast from Benek until you reach a fork running northwest. It should be pointed out that the road as it appears on your map doesn’t always correspond to what any rational person would consider a road in-game, and when the two disagree, continue following the minimap, even as it leads you down a slope. Near the entrance to this cave is the most fearsome foe Geralt has ever faced - a Snow Hare! Seriously though, look at that body count! Fortunately the vicious critter has no appetite for Witchers, which is just as well, considering we can’t hurt it even if we wanted to.

(1 of 3) Head southwest to find a cave guarded by one dynamite bunny! Fortunately Witcher isn’t on the menu, so head on past it.

Enter the cave and make your way into its depths. When you find yourself turning north be wary, as one of the chambers is occupied by Ghouls (Lv2). Dispatch the necrophages, then search the eastern edge of the search area in this cavern to find the Dragonsroot you seek - it’ll glow red when viewed with your Witcher senses. With the root in your possession, all you need to do to finish this quest is return to the Old Sage in Benek to get your second foretellin’. This one is certainly more dramatic than the first one was, but given all the coded references it’s hard to tell if it’s more useful. Whatever its veracity, the Old Sage, spent after the effort, will leave following the vision, the quest well end, and you’ll gain a modest amount of EXP.
