Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Boss Fight: Defiant Triton

By
Ben Chard

This is a guide for the Defiant Triton boss fight found in Triton’s Hero Quest, Doing It My Way in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, taking place in the Cadensia Region.

Triton will battle you at the end of his Hero Quest, Doing It My Way.

How to Beat Defiant Triton

Name Level Type
Defiant Triton 48 Moebius_Ouroboros.png

Looks like Triton is not content to let you win this contest without one last challenge, a tussle with him and his crew to determine the victor. Despite the unfairness of it all, Triton is still a Moebius and being Ouroboros, your task is to take him down.

He’ll be flanked by three of his crew members but thankfully, none of them are Healers so you can feel free to take them down in any order that you like, so long as you focus on them before Triton himself. All three of them are hand-to-hand fighters and have similar Arts, often inflicting Knockback with them.

As for Triton, he has plenty of Arts he will use against you in this battle, and you can learn more about them below:

  • Magnificent Fist: Defiant Triton will perform a single punch against a single target, dealing moderate-major damage.
  • Pirate Lariat: Defiant Triton swings at a single target dealing moderate damage and has a chance to inflict Topple.
  • Peril Punch: Defiant Triton strikes at foes in a line in front of him, dealing moderate damage.
  • Captain Strike: A swooping strike that sees Defiant Triton attack a single target, dealing major damage and has a chance to inflict Blowdown.
  • Final Countdown: A multi-hit combo in which Defiant Triton attacks a single target, dealing up to major damage based on hits connected.

Most of Defiant Triton’s Arts play out the same way, often single punches that can inflict moderate damage or more and often has the chance to either Topple or Blowdown your characters. He only has one AoE available to him in the form Peril Punch that will hit characters in front of him, this can be dangerous, and he will use it often enough to cause you problems.

The other main Art to look out for is Captain Strike, on Normal it appears to miss fairly often but should it connect, the target is going to take major damage and sometimes Blowdown too. Often or not, this will come after another Art and can usually down a character if it connects. Final Countdown is another Art that can cause problems once you Enrage Triton, but it’ll take him connecting with every hit to be a real issue.

(1 of 2) Deal with the rest of Triton’s crew first

Deal with the rest of Triton’s crew first (left), you can easily lock Triton down with combos. (right)

Defiant Triton has one glaring weakness, that he’s highly susceptible to Combos. If you prepare beforehand and make sure you have multiple methods of inflicting at least Break > Topple (or use your Interlinks) then you can essentially lock him down for large periods of time or cancel his Arts before he has a chance to pull them off. Defiant Triton isn’t an overly tough battle, once you take down the rest of his crew, lock him down and use a Chain Attack for an easy victory.
