The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Illusory Realm: Waterblight Ganon

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

A guide on how to beat the Waterblight Ganon boss in the Illusory Realm, which is the boss fight for the Ex Champion Mipha’s Song DLC Quest.

Time to head over to the Divine Beast Vah Ruta to face the final trial!

How to Unlock the Illusory Realm Waterblight Ganon

Before you can access this boss fight, you’ll need to collect all three Ruta’s Emblems from the three shrines in the Lanayru region. Head over to our guides below if you need to find out how to unlock and complete them.

Once you’ve collected all the emblems, head over to Divine Beast Vah Ruta. The whole aim of this boss fight is to fight Waterblight Ganon in an illusory realm where you have different weapons, armor and items to what you usually wear. You’ll be given the following items to fight the boss with:

  • Zora Armor Set (level 2 upgrades)
  • Lightscale Trident
  • Ceremonial Trident x2
  • Silver Bow
  • Arrows x10
  • Hyrule Bass, Hylian Shroom, Fleet-Lotus Seeds

In the Illusory Realm, you’ll be wearing some Zora Armor and wield Zora-style weapons.

Fear not! Even though they’ve only given you a little bit of food, you will have access to all your Champion abilities - including Mipha’s Grace! So you shouldn’t struggle too much so long as all your abilities are available.

How to Beat Waterblight Ganon in the Illusory Realm

Once you’ve witnessed a brief cutscene and been given your new equipment, you’ll now need to fight the Waterblight Ganon.

Return of the Waterblight Ganon!

So you’re given 3 melee weapons because they expect you to break a couple, but honestly, we were able to beat him relatively easily without even breaking our first weapon of choice! We used the Lightscale Trident as it is more powerful than the Ceremonial Tridents, with 22 damage compared to 14.

First Phase

During this first phase, you’ll have to go head to head with the boss on the ground. Just run up and hit him as much as you can, luckily the Ceremonial Trident is a fast weapon and you can get a lot of jabs in in a short amount of time. Watch out for his attacks though, they’re pretty damaging and they’ll knock you prone. Thankfully, he gives quite a lot of warning as he charges up his attack.

If you’ve been knocked back, you could try to shoot him in the eye whilst you’re far away from his melee attacks. If you also don’t have enough time to dodge an attack, you could block using Daruk’s Protection to block the attack and stun Waterblight Ganon. Make sure to save one charge of Daruk’s Protection - you’ll need it for later!

Once you’ve hit him for half of his health, you’ll go into the second phase!

Second Phase

In this phase you’ll need to make use of the various stone platforms and wait for him to launch an ice cube at you. Use stasis to freeze the ice cube as it gets close to you and then hit it with your spear a good few times so that it launches right back at Waterblight Ganon and temporarily knocks him out.

(1 of 2) Freeze the cube using stasis

Freeze the cube using stasis (left), then hit it a couple of times to launch it back at him! (right)

You can then head over quickly and deal a bunch of damage to him with your melee weapon whilst he’s incapacitated. If you’re quick enough you could easily get him to quarter health with one ice cube and melee combo.

Next, he’ll start throwing several ice cubes at you! You’ll want to use your cryonis rune ability to destroy all but one then repeat the process to knock the cube back into him using stasis. Once you’ve successfully hit him, head over and jab him with your Trident as much as you can. Unfortunately, he gets up a lot quicker this time, so you’ll not be able to finish him for good on the second ice cube combo, and it will unlock the final phase.

You’ll need to launch another ice cube at him!

Phase Three

During this phase, he will use his Guardian missile laser to try to hit you. As it charges up, get ready to block it with Daruk’s Protection so that the laser is deflected! Once you’ve done this successfully, he’ll fall to the ground and you can head over and jab him for the final time with your Trident!

(1 of 2) Block the laser using Daruk’s Protection to deal damage and stun Waterblight Ganon

Block the laser using Daruk’s Protection to deal damage and stun Waterblight Ganon (left), you can then finish him off! (right)

Mipha’s Grace +

Once you’ve defeated the Waterblight Ganon in the Illusory Realm, you’ll be subjected to a short cutscene with Kass and then Mipha will offer an upgrade for Mipha’s Grace. It’ll now recharge a lot quicker - yay!

(1 of 2) Mipha will call to you and offer an upgrade for Mipha’s Grace

Mipha will call to you and offer an upgrade for Mipha’s Grace (left), it will now require less time to recharge. (right)
