This quest begins immediately after In the Absence of an Ealdorman. After learning that Ealdorman Hundbeorht is dead, Eivor is curious to know more about Aelfgar, a potential new Ealdorman for Lincolnscire. You’ll find Aelfgar at Aelfgarstun, a small village located northwest of Lincoln.
Speak with Aelfgar at Aelfgarstun¶
As you approach the village from the east, you’ll find Aelfgar inside a small house. Speak with him to begin a cutscene, during which you’ll have a few dialogue options. Choose as you wish here. Aelfgar will offer you the unique weapon Hundbeorht’s Bow. You won’t be able to refuse it regardless of what you say, and you’ll find it in your inventory after the scene.
After you’ve been given the bow, Aelfgar will suggest that you join him in hunting a bear that has been plaguing his land. Summon your horse or take one nearby and follow him north. When you reach a small pond Aelfgar will dismount and introduce you to a Dane named Grim. Respond to his prompt in whatever way you want, then climb up the hill to the southeast in search of the bear in the cave.

When you enter the cave you’ll find a carcass in the first chamber. Examine it to trigger the next phase of the quest, during which a number of wolves will attack you, Aelfgar, and Grim. Fight them off and then continue through the cave to the south, following Aelfgar’s marker. When you exit the cave Aelfgar will note that his estate is on fire. He requests that you help him to defeat the arsonists.
Reach Aelfgar’s Estate¶
You’ll need run southwest from the cave entrance to reach Aelfgar’s estate and protect its people. When you get there, you’ll find a great number of Saxons pillaging the place. You’ll need to defeat the attackers and drive the rest out of the estate, then speak with Aelfgar to begin a cutscene and complete the quest. As the quest ends, the bear that you were initially intending to hunt will appear. Defeat it before you leave the area.
