Pathfinder: Kingmaker

The Court Alchemist

(1 of 2) Recruit Bokken at Oleg’s Trading Post,

Recruit Bokken at Oleg’s Trading Post, (left), and build “Bokken’s Alchemical Shop” in your Outskirts village. (right)

You’ll pick up this quest shortly into Chapter 2, as Jhod will pester you in your throne room and inform you that you could use an alchemist, and Bokken could use a job. Probably not going to be easy finding another alchemist in these lands, especially not one so close at hand. You can go finish this little quest any time after it’s assigned, but for the walkthrough we delay until after Troll Trouble, when we’ll get the companion quests Investigate My Death, Sorrowflow, and most importantly, Shelyn’s Chosen, the latter of which will draw us back north to Oleg’s Trading Post. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, right?

Whenever you go back to Oleg’s Trading Post, be sure to talk to Bokken and pick the dialogue option “Bokken, how would you like to become my court alchemist?”. Bokken accepts, you earn some XP, and the whole ordeal is surprisingly painless. What, don’t have any swarms to send us to fight or anything?

Reward
180 XP

Recruiting Bokken is a fine start, but to actually see him become productive you’ll need to build him Bokken’s Alchemical Shop in your village in the Outskirts. This will set you back 45 BP and will take some time to construct, but once it’s done, Bokken will get to work crafting for you… although the results may take some time to see.

After roughly 3-7 weeks, Bokken will have finished his first creation for you - likely some potion or another, but there’s also the chance he’ll make a non-consumable item for you. This first item is random, but you can influence what he makes in subsequent weeks via dialogue (you can find more information on what sorts of items Bokken can craft on [his Artisan page].

While this quest will have long since ended by the time Bokken actually produces anything for you, it will eventually lead to a return on investment, and during the visit where Bokken gives you his first creation under your auspices, he’ll also mention some books he wants you to find for him, starting the quest An Ancient Fomula.

At the mansion of the Swordlord Jamandi Aldori, adventurers have gathered, lured by the promise of dominion should one of them conquer the nearby Stolen Lands and oust its current overlord - the Stag Lord. You are one such adventurer, and Jamandi’s offer isn’t just a benevolent call-to-arms to make the Stolen Lands safe for normal folk, there’s political angles to its conquest, and the ultimate allegience of its new ruler. More than that, however, a sinister, primordial force has her own interests in the Stolen Lands, and a desire to see new rulers rise… and fall. The Pathfinder: Kingmaker guide includes a full walkthrough of the game’s main campaign, including various side quests, companion quests and strategies.
