Description

The level Grand Star Rescue is the first level in the game, however you will not have access to Gateway Galaxy again until much later in the game. This is because you’ll need a lot of Grand Stars to power up the Observatory. You’ll only have access to the Gate dome after retrieving the sixth Grand Star in King Kaliente’s Spicy Return.

Grand Star Rescue

The goal of this level is to rescue your first Grand Star!

Enemies

  • Goombas - Goombas will simply run at you and try to damage you by touching Mario. To defeat them, spin attack them then run at them to kick them away, or just jump on their head.

  • Meteors - Meteors will periodically rain down on certain planets. If you’re hit by one you’ll take damage.

  • Big Goomba - The Big Goomba is just a big Goomba. You’ll need to spin attack it and then run at him to kick him into space.

Spin the Goombas to incapacitate them.

Gateway’s Purple Coins

The goal of this level is to collect 100 Purple Coins. This is the first Purple Coin level available to you and will serve as an introduction into Red Power Stars.

Red Power-Up Star

During this level, you’ll also have access to a new Mario form. When you walk through a Red Star power-up, you’ll be able to fly! To do so, you’ll need to press Y to spin whilst jumping in the air. Whilst flying, you can collect purple coins by flying straight through them, or you can spin again to grab stars in close proximity. You can only fly a certain distance before your power-up runs out, but there are a few power-up spawn points so you can just grab another to begin your flight again.

This is your first run in with the red power-up star that allows you to fly!

New Enemies

  • Thorny Flowers - Thorny flowers will prick you if you go near them. You cannot spin attack or jump on them. The only way to get rid of them is to spin a coconut or a green bulb sprout at them.

  • Petapeta - They are only visible when Mario isn’t moving and if he moves, the Petapeta will be invisible. The Petapeta can be located if it’s invisible by looking out for footprints. If you spin attack where the freshest footprints are, you’ll be able to hit the Petapeta, making him visible and incapacitated. Jump on the incapacitated Petapeta for a bunch of Star Bits.

Other Enemies

  • Goombas
