Bob-Omb Battlefield is the first course in Super Mario 64 and is accessed by the door to the left, upon entering the first room of Peach’s Castle. It is the door that has a star on it with no number. The course takes place on a battlefield, where the Bob-Omb Buddies are doing battle with the regular Bob-Ombs. The Bob-Omb Buddies are pink versions of their explosive brethren, but they are completely friendly to you and will even help you out on some occasions. You will start out by two Bob-Omb Buddies, with a cannon nearby. After completing the first star, Big Bob-Omb on the Summit, you can speak with the one Bob-Omb Buddy by the cannon to be able to use them to launch Mario throughout the course.

The regular Bob-Ombs in the level will begin chasing Mario if you get in their line of sight when close, with lit fuse, then explode after a few seconds. If you manage to get behind them without the Bob-Ombs noticing, you will be able to pick them up (their fuse will become lit) and toss them. In various sections of the course, in the open field areas by the large gate and near the one cannon, water bubbles will be fired at you. You will always see a shadow of the water bubble before it lands, so you have a few seconds to get out of the way. If it hits you, Mario will get knocked down and take some damage. There is a flower patch by some Goombas past the first ramp that, if you stand in it, will teleport you over by the large gateway at the base of the mountain.

As you follow the path, you will pass by a Chain Chomp that is, well, chained up to a wooden post. Stay within a certain range of it and the Chain Chomp will snap at you, but you can easily stick to the barbed wire fence to avoid getting hit. Past the wooden bridge that seesaws are two open fields, with the upper section leading to the path to the top of the mountain. There is an opening on the far side of the field, though, leading to a purple switch that opens the nearby gate, acting like a shortcut. As you begin your ascent, you will see large, black orbs being rolling down the mountain. These orbs, called Big Steelies, cannot be defeated and will knock off two pieces of Mario’s health, should he get hit.

Not too far up the mountain path, you should find a little alcove carved into the mountain itself. Standing near the middle of this alcove will teleport Mario up near the summit. If you do not use this shortcut, the remaining bit up the mountain is pretty uneventful. You will run across the cannon shooting water bubbles at you, but there is nothing you can do to stop it. Not too far past that, there is a heart that you can use to replenish your life, should you be injured. This heart doesn’t disappear at all, so it doesn’t matter how much it is used. On the first star, you will encounter the boss at the summit and on subsequent stars, the summit will be vacant (barring one thing).

Enemies

  • Bob-Ombs: They light their fuse chase after Mario if they see him when near, exploding in a few seconds. You can also pick them up to throw them, making them instantly explode.

  • Goomba: They will simply chase after you if they see you when you’re near. A simple attack will do them in, as well as jumping on them.

  • Big Steely: Large, black orbs that are found in a pit before the mountain ascent and also roll down the mountain. You can’t do anything with these, so avoid at all costs.

  • Koopa Troopa: Only available during Shoot to the Island in the Sky or later Stars. It is found in the open field by the flower teleport not too far from the start. Hit the Koopa Troopa to knock it out of its shell, then attack it again to spawn a Blue Coin. You can also surf on the empty shell.

(1 of 2) The Koopa Troopa is only there during later Stars

The Koopa Troopa is only there during later Stars (left), You can use its shell to surf around the course (right)

  • King Bob-Omb: Located at the summit during Big Bob-Omb on the Summit, it can grab you and throw you. You need to get behind it in order to pick it up. Toss it three times in order to earn a Power Star.

1-Up Mushrooms

  • At the top of the tree by the cannon on top of a small hill

  • Sitting by the purple switch that unlocks the gate in the tunnel

  • Appears after collecting the coins circling a flower patch
