Upon starting the game, you will be placed outside of the castle. There’s not much to do here, but if you manage to get all 120 stars in the game, then there is a special secret that will become unlocked.

Main Lobby

Princess Peach’s castle is basically split into four main areas, with the first one being just through the front doors. There will be four main courses present here, as well as five of the Castle’s Secret Stars. In order to access everything, you will need to collect 10 Power Stars, although only 8 stars are needed to progress to the next hub.

Not technically in the basement, but you will need to collect 12 Power Stars before Big Boo’s Haunt becomes available. It can be found through either of the wooden doors in the main lobby, then down the hall and into an outside area with a fountain. Find the Boo with the cage inside it, which leads you to the course.

Castle Basement

Upon clearing Bowser in the Dark World, you will receive a key that unlocks the door leading into the basement. There are four more main courses down here, as well as six of the Castle’s Secret Stars. The only requirement concerning stars is the door leading to Dire, Dire Docks and Bowser in the Fire Sea, which requires a total of 30 Power Stars in your possession.

Castle’s Second Floor

Whenever you clear Bowser in the Fire Sea, you will receive another key that opens the locked door at the top of the stairs in the Main Lobby, allowing you access to the second floor. There are no star requirements for the four courses you can do here.

Castle’s Top Floor

In order to reach the top floor of the castle, you have to find the stairs on the second floor and have at least 50 Power Stars in your possession. You will find the final two courses on this top floor, as well as two more secret stars. In order to reach the final Bowser stage, you will need at least 70 stars, although the doors open below that. If you don’t have 70 stars, then the stairs leading to the final Bowser level will be endless.
