How to Get the Sword of Night and Flame Early

By

Information about how to obtain the Sword of Night and Flame in Elden Ring.

The Sword of Night and Flame.

What is the Sword of Night and Flame?

The Sword of Night and Flame is a one-handed straight sword that deals physical, fire and magic damage. These forms of damage scale off of Strength/Dexterity, Faith and Intelligence, respectively. While a fairly potent weapon in its own right, its unique Night-and-Flame Stance abilities are why this sword is (or rather, was - see note, above) highly sought after.

With its L2 + R1 attack it’ll shoot out a magical laser (damage scales off Intelligence) which can deal tremendous damage to all targets in a line. Its range is surprisingly limited, enemies can avoid it by dodging/strafing to the side, and for some reason your character will absolutely refuse to aim up or do, making uneven terrain a nuisance, but the sheer damage output this beam can deal under optimal conditions makes it worth the caveats.

Its L2 + R2 attack winds up and shoots out a gout of flame. This attack scales off Faith, and while it has an even shorter range, the broad sweep of fire makes it easier to deal with mobs, or strike opponents who are otherwise quick with their lateral movements. The damage diversity is always nice, in any event.

Both attacks have quite long charge times, so some practice is required so you know when it’s safe to use these attacks.

One of this weapon’s other downsides - aside from the dangerous trek to recover it - is that it requires 12 Strength, 12 Dexterity, 24 Intelligence and 24 Faith to wield properly. Assuming base stats of 10, that’s a 32 point investment just to use this weapon - a big ask, especially since Intelligence and Faith are rarely complimentary stats.

How to Get the Sword of Night and Flame Early in Elden Ring

To get the Sword of Night and Flame you’ll need to head to the Caria Manor along the northern end of Liurnia, which is quite a distance north, especially for a new character. Before you get started, however, you’ll need to acquire Spectral Steed Whistle, which you’ll be given the first time you rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace near the Gatefront Ruins. Once you have this, you’re good to go.

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to find the Sword of Night and Flame:

The first few steps are fairly easy (and in fact you’ll have to do them before you’re fit to make a serious run at this weapon), but we’ll assume you’re fresh out of the Stranded Graveyard.

First you’ll need to head northwest to the Church of Ellah, then follow the road northeast to reach the Gatefront Ruins. Rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace and you’ll be visited by Melina, who will give you the Spectral Steed Whistle, which you can use to summon your mount, Torrent.

How to Get From the Gatefront Ruins to the Lake-Facing Cliffs

Summon Torrent and follow the road northwest, through the Stormgate. You’ll have to run past a blockade, but Torrent can simply charge through most of the barriers, so don’t overthink things and just follow the road. Eventually you should see a shack on your right - this is the Stormhill Shack location, where you’ll find the Stormhill Shack Sit of Grace.

Rest up if you need to, then keep following the road north, and where the road begins to veer to the northwest, abandon it and continue north along a trail running north under a massive elevated bridge. Eventually you’ll pick up a less intact road which leads to a collapsed bridge, upon which the Finger Reader Crone sits. Ignore her, she’s not helpful for your current objective.

Ride to the end of the bridge and turn left (southwest) to find a winding trail you can follow along the edge of Stormveil Castle. The only opposition you’ll face here are Wolves, so you should have little trouble riding through the Liurnia, whereupon you’ll find the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace.

How to get From the Lake-Facing Cliffs to the Northern Liurnia Lake Shore

The next phase of the trek is a long one, but it’s not terribly involved. Follow the trail southwest, then downhill to the northwest and ride through a fort - you’re strongly advised not to engage any foes here if you don’t have to.

North of this fort you should find a lake, which, like many lakes in Elden Ring, is only ankle deep throughout. You’ll want to ride through this lake heading northwest, not picking any fights along the way. It’s a large area, roughly the entire size of Limgrave. Eventually you should spot a massive structure jutting out of the lake - Raya Lucaria Academy. It’s not a destination yet, but it is a good landmark.

Head to the shore to the west of the Raya Lucaria Academy, then follow a trail north. You should find the Foot of the Four Belfries Site of Grace on your left, Activate it so you don’t have to pass through the lake again if something should go awry, then continue north. You’ll have to run through another fort and you may encounter a Troll-drawn carriage - avoid the undead and keep following the trail northeast until you find the Northern Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace.

How to get From the Northern Liurnia Lake Shore to the Main Caria Manor Gate

Following the trail northeast is about to get a bit more complicated, as the Kingsrealm Ruins lie ahead. Unless you go out of your way looking for trouble, you should only find a handful of undead sorcerers in these ruins. They don’t deal a ton of damage, but their penchant for casting spells and immediately teleporting afterwards can make them a nuisance if you don’t have a ranged attack or a way of catching them.

Fight through them or ignore them as you head northeast through the ruins until you find your way seemingly blocked by a wall. Attack the brick-filled archway to dispel it, freeing you to pass through and reach the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. You can also find Smithing Master Iji to the left of the road, and he sells a variety of Somber Smithing Stones (grades 1-4) which may just come in handy soon.

Press on to the northeast, but stay off the road, as waves of lightning will periodically strike. If you’re off to the right of the road you should be fine - just avoid the magic and ride up to Caria Manor to the northeast. Just outside of the entrance you’ll find the Main Caria Manor Gate Site of Grace.

How to Find the Sword of Night and Flame in the Caria Manor

Reaching Caria Manor was trouble enough, but actually passing through it to get the Sword of Night and Flame is a challenge in its own right. Head through the front gate and immediate turn left; follow the wall here northwest and avoid the Spider Hands that emerge from the ground to harass you - they’re not too dangerous, but you shouldn’t let them distract you.

Go under an arch to the northeast and continue hugging the wall to the left, ultimately making your way northwest into a building guarded by Spider Hands, both large and small. Once inside you’re relatively safe, just head upstairs until you find the Manor Lower Level Site of Grace.

Activate the aforementioned Site of Grace, then go through the doorway to the southeast and cross the stone walkway ahead. Don’t get complacent at the apparent lack of enemies, however, as Phantom Raya Lucaria Soldiers will appear as you cross. Try to run past them and make your way southeast, then northeast, then southeast again. When you reach the third tower, turn north and get a running jump off the ledge to reach a building below, then drop off another ledge to the north to find yourself near a ladder.

Descend the ladder and you’ll find yourself in a room with a chest to the south. Inside is the Sword of Night and Flame.
