How to Get Bloodhound's Fang Early

By
Nathan Garvin

Information about how to obtain Bloodhound’s Fang in Elden Ring, including information about how to find and summon Blaidd and how to find and defeat Bloodhound Knight Darriwil.

The Bloodhound Fang is a curved greatsword that inflicts blood loss.

What is the Bloodhound’s Fang?

The Bloodhound’s Fang is a curved greatswords that scales with both Strength and Dexterity, and requires 18 in the former and 17 in the latter to wield properly. The requirements are pretty tame compared to, say, the Sword of Night and Flame, and Bloodhound’s Fang inflicts 55 blood loss buildup each hit. It also has the unique ability Bloodhound’s Finesse, which performs a spinning slash during a backwards leap after a short charge up. It’s FP cost is low enough to make this an easily spammable move.

How to Get the Bloodhound’s Fang Early in Elden Ring

To get this weapon you’ll need to travel to the Mistwood Ruins, which isn’t all that far away from the start of the game in the grand scheme of things. Getting a mount will make this even faster, and is therefore recommended.

Assuming you’re starting out from The First Step Site of Grace, you’ll need to head northwest to the Church of Elleh. There’s a good chance you’ll be coming back here if you want Bloodhound’s Fang early, so do be sure to activate the Church of Elleh Site of Grace. Once done, follow the road northeast to reach the Gatefront Ruins. Rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace and you’ll be visited by Melina, who will give you the Spectral Steed Whistle, which you can use to summon your mount, Torrent.

How to Get From the Gatefront Ruins to the Third Church of Marika

Summon Torrent and follow the road southeast. Cross a bridge and when you reach a fork, turn north, ultimately following the trail northeast until you reach the Third Church of Marika.

You may encounter Kaiden Sellswords and a Troll-drawn carriage convoy along the road southeast of the Gatefront Ruins, but you should be able to evade them by just keeping your distance and riding past. On the northeastern fork after the bridge you’ll encounter more enemies, including numerous Demi-Humans under a collapsed curved building that now arches over the road. You’ll probably hear somebody named Kenneth Haight call out to you here - don’t worry, just ignore the whole situation, they’ll still be here when you want to come back and deal with them. Finally, just outside of the Third Church of Marika you’ll find a Troll armed with a sword appropriate to its stature. Again, no reason to fight, just ride past it and into the church.

How to get from the Third Church of Marika to the Mistwood Ruins

This leg of the journey is technically optional, as your real goal - the Forlorn Hound Evergaol - is actually south of the Waypoint Ruins, which in turn required you to turn south after crossing the bridge past the Gatefront Ruins earlier, instead of heading north to the Third Church of Marika. But if you want to gain Bloodhound’s Fang early and easy, you’ll need to take this detour to the Mistwood Ruins.

From the Third Church of Marika, mount your horse and follow the road south, then southeast into the MIstwood. You’ll likely encounter a Lesser Runebear along the road, as well as some Demi-Humans near a sacked wagon, but if you just ride past you don’t have to deal with them. On the other hand, you can also find the Map: Limgrave, East near a monument along the road as you go.

When you find the ruins to the right of the road, listen for the sound of a wolf howling. You don’t need to explore the ruins, or really even get off your horse - there’s no Site of Grace here, either. Just make sure you hear the howling, then travel back to the Church of Elleh.

How to Find Blaidd

When you’re back at the Church of Elleh, talk to Kale, and pick the option “About the howling in Mistwood” and he’ll teach you the Gesture: Finger Snap. Armed with this gesture, return to the Mistwood Ruins (you’ll need to ride back southwest from the Third Church of Marika) and head to the northern outskirts of the ruins, just beyond the tower where you found the Smithing Stone (2) earlier. Use the Gesture: Finger Snap, then search in an alcove behind (north of) the tower to find Blaidd, a giant wolf-man. Despite his fearsome bearing, he’s not hostile, and if you talk to him you’ll be able to summon him when you head southwest to the Forlorn Hound Evergaol, where you can confront Bloodhound Knight Darriwil. Summoning Blaidd will make this fight much, much easier, and allow you to acquire the excellent Bloodhound’s Fang weapon, which is as good a reason to find Blaidd in the Mistwood Ruins as any other.

How to Find the Forlorn Hound Evergaol and Defeat Bloodhound Knight Darriwil

Now that you’ve recruited Blaidd, it’s time to go after your new sword.

Return to the Gatefront Ruins and from there follow the road southeast until you reach a bridge. Cross it and at a fork turn south and follow the road. To your left you’ll find the Waypoint Ruins (you can claim the Site of Grace here if you want another fast travel location) and further down the road you’ll find the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace to the right. Activate at least this latter Site of Grace, as due south of it is the Forlorn Hound Evergaol.

Make your way uphill to the south until you find a circular arena with a glowing platform in the center - your typical evergaol setup. Enter the circular central ring and activate it to enter the evergaol. Once inside (the evergaol will be surrounded by a shimmering barrier), interact with some golden runes to the south to summon Blaidd, then continue south towards a bright spot on the edge of the evergaol barrier to encounter Bloodhound Knight Darriwil.

For a lone, early-game character, this boss can be a pain. He’s fast, aggressive, and has a penchant for performing lunging, sweeping strikes with his sword, which also inflicts bleed. He’ll likely kill in two hits, and his mobility can make it hard to put distance between you. You can’t summon allies for this fight, aside from Blaidd, but Blaidd makes all the difference, as he’ll draw aggro and deal some chip damage, giving you the opportunity to land your own attacks when Bloodhound Knight Darriwil is distracted.

Defeat this boss and you’ll obtain Bloodhound’s Fang. Talk to Blaidd after the fight and he’ll give you a Somber Smithing Stone (2), which you’ll need to upgrade your new sword.
