Elden Ring

How to Find Gatekeeper Gostoc and Complete His Quest

By
Ben Chard

In Elden Ring, you’ll find a wide range of characters that will share their plight with you, most of these will have Quests that span multiple locations. This page will detail where you can find Gatekeeper Gostoc and complete his Questline.

You will meet Gatekeeper Gostoc in Stormveil Castle.

First Meeting - Stormveil Castle

Your first meeting with Gostoc is a difficult one to miss, since you’ll hear him calling out to you as you head to the left of the main gate of Stormveil Castle, shortly after defeating Margit. He’ll direct you towards an alternative passage into the castle, although he will offer to open the main gate should you feel daring enough. Outside of this, Gostoc seems to be completely harmless upon first impressions…

You can meet Gostoc to the west of the Main Gate Site of Grace.

Losing Runes on Pickup

There’s a nasty secret involved with Gostoc that is somewhat hidden. After speaking with Gostoc for the first time, every time you die and retrieve your Runes, you may notice that you have a lot less than when you died. This is due to the fact that Gostoc is taking 30% of them and “banking” them. You can restore these Runes by killing Gostoc, at which point you’ll get all the Runes that he’s taken from every death however hold off on that until at least his second meeting.

Also note that if you wish to retrieve these Runes, you must kill Gostoc before defeating Godrick at the end of Stormveil Castle or they will be forever lost.

Second Meeting - Stormveil Castle

As you explore Stormveil Castle, you’ll eventually reach the courtyard and from there, you’ll be able to enter the room where you can raise the main gate (if it’s not already open). There’s a hole you can drop down in this room to find yourself back at Gostoc and upon speaking to him, he’ll reveal his surprise that you’re still alive. At this point, he agrees to sell his wares to you, of which you can purchase the Bandit equipment that cannot be purchased elsewhere:

Once you finally defeat Godrick in the north of Stormveil Castle, you’ll find Gostoc in the same area, stamping on the remains of Godrick in disgust. Speak with him to hear about his feelings and he’ll remark that he’s finally free. Gostoc remains here for a vast majority of the game at this point, and although you can kill him so that you can obtain Gostoc’s Bell Bearing, it will lock you out of another reward.

Final Meeting - Stormveil Castle

Once you’ve seen both Nepheli Loux and Kenneth Haight’s Quests to their conclusion and have reached Crumbling Farum Azula, Gostoc will move to the throne room with Nepheli Loux and Kenneth and agree to sell you an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone for 20,000 Runes.
