How to Find Ranni the Witch and Complete Her Quest

By
Ben Chard

In Elden Ring, you’ll find a wide range of characters that will share their plight with you, most of these will have Quests that span multiple locations. This page will detail where you can find Ranni the Witch and complete her Questline.

Ranni the Witch is arguably the most important character in Elden Ring.

How to Meet Ranni at Ranni’s Rise

You will have actually met Ranni before this encounter, she previously went under the guise of Renna and gave you the ability to use Spirit Ashes back at the Church of Elleh. This is an entirely optional encounter however, you can still meet and begin her Quest after you gain access to Ranni’s Rise, which you can do so by defeating Royal Knight Loretta at Caria Manor.

Once Loretta is defeated, head out the back and you’ll reach the Three Sisters area, guarded by the fearsome Glintstone Dragon Adula which you can choose to fight or run by (it’s suggested to kill it if you’re able to) and then ascend the middle of the three towers here to reach Ranni’s Rise.

(1 of 2) You will find Ranni’s Rise at the back of Caria Manor

You will find Ranni’s Rise at the back of Caria Manor (left), you must ask this first and return to Rogier if you are on his Quest before entering her service. (right)

Once you speak with her, she asks if you will serve her and you must agree to this to continue her Quest. If you have been progressing Rogier’s Quest you will first ask about the Cursemark and must return to him before Ranni will offer you to enter into her service. Once agreed, she bids you to speak with her companions below, namely Blaidd who will then move to Siofra River at this point.

Where is Blaidd in Siofra River?

You’ll need to seek out Blaidd at this point (you can speak with Smithing Master Iji and Preceptor Seluvis before but it’s not necessary), and you can do so by heading down to the Siofra River, accessed via the Siofra River Well in eastern Limgrave. Once here, continue on until you reach the Siofra River Bank Site of Grace and travel southeast to locate Blaidd. You conversation with Blaidd suggests Preceptor Seluvis knows more than he’s letting on.

Return to Preceptor Seluvis, found at the southern town of the Three Sisters area behind Caria Manor and speak with him, he’ll give you Seluvis’s Introduction and tells you to seek out Sorcerer Sellen.

Speak to Sorcerer Sellen

You may have already met Sorcerer Sellen, but if not, you can find her by heading to Limgrave and defeating the Mad Pumpkin Head at the Waypoint Ruins. Upon speaking to her, she’ll reveal that General Radhan stopped the stars and that you’ll need to defeat him should you wish to progress further into Nokron. With this information, you can return to Blaidd and deliver Sellen’s story and points you in the direction of Redmane Castle in Caelid where you can find General Radhan.

Defeat General Radhan

You’ll most likely have to put this Quest on hold for a while at this point, you’ll need to travel to Caelid and progress through the main quest there until you meet Blaidd again at Redmane Castle Plaza. Travelling north from here will direct you to a portal that will culminate in the boss battle with Starscourge Radhan. Upon his defeat, a meteor shower will occur, indicating that the way to Nokron is now open.

(1 of 2) Head to Redmane Castle in Caelid and defeat Radahn

Head to Redmane Castle in Caelid and defeat Radahn (left), this will unlock the way to Nokron. (right)

Enter Nokron and Obtain the Fingerslayer Blade

Return to Limgrave and return to the Siofra River by taking the lift back down. From the Ancestral Woods Site of the Grace (found in the center of the region), you can make your way down a new path to reach Nokron at long last. Exploring the area, you’ll eventually reach a large statue of a Finger Reader and, below it, you’ll find a chest containing the Fingerslayer Blade, this is not a weapon, but a Key Item.

With this in hand, return to Ranni at Ranni’s Rise and hand it over to her to complete Ranni’s first task. Speak with her once more and she’ll hand over the Carian Inverted Statue which is needed to gain access to the Divine Tower of Liurna. Before you head there, be sure to head to the Preceptor Seluvis to find him dead, allowing you to collect his equipment and his Bell Bearing to give to the Twin Maiden Husks.

(1 of 4) Head through Nokron to obtain the Fingerslayer Blade

Make your way to the Study Hall Entrance now and place the Carian Inverted Statue on the pedestal found at the Carian Study Hall (east of Liurnia) and this will allow you to reach the Divine Tower of Liurnia where you can obtain the Cursemark of Death upon a corpse.

Find the Miniature Ranni and Defeat Baleful Shadow

Return to Renna’s Rise and you’ll find the way to the top of the tower is now open where you’ll find a portal, use this to arrive in Ainsel River, below Liurna. You’ll immediately spot an open coffin and inside, the Miniature Ranni, pocket this and then use the nearby Site of Grace to discover an option to speak to Miniature Ranni. Select this option three times and Ranni will communicate via the doll, and she will request you seek out and defeat the Baleful Shadow.

(1 of 4) Search the coffin to obtain the Miniature Ranni

Follow the path far to the southwest to eventually reach Nokstella, Eternal City and proceed through there until you meet the Invader Baleful Shadow. This is a difficult battle, but persevere and once the deed is done you’ll receive the Discarded Palace Key.

Obtain the Dark Moon Ring

At this point, you should have defeated Rennala in Raya Lucaria Academy, return to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace and you’ll be able to unlock the chest here to obtain the Dark Moon Ring. Again, you can’t equip this as it’s just a Key Item but you’ll need it to advance Ranni’s Quest.

Open the locked chest in the room where you fought Rennala to obtain the Dark Moon Ring.

Defeat Astel and Reach Moonlight Altar

Return to where you fought Baleful Shadow and proceed down the lift to arrive at the Lake of Rot, you’ll want protection against Rot (such as Preserving Boluses) you navigate this area. Proceed through the area and at the far end, you’ll reach a coffin that you can interact with. This will whisk you off to a boss arena, where you’ll need to defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, a very tough boss that blocks your way. Once defeated, if you have the Dark Moon ring, you’ll be able to proceed to the end of the cave and take the lift up to the Moonlight Altar.

(1 of 2) Use the coffin at the end of the Lake of Rot

Use the coffin at the end of the Lake of Rot (left), this will allow you to reach Astel which guards the way to Ranni. (right)

Reach the Cathedral of Manus Celes and Obtain Dark Moon Greatsword

You’ll find yourself in an extremely hostile area rife with dragons and a rematch with Glintstone Dragon Adula should you wish it. Just beyond this dragon is the Cathedral of Manus Celes and inside you’ll find a hole you can drop down. Follow the path in this cave to reach the resting place of Ranni the Witch, interact with her to place the ring on her and you’ll be greeted with the Ranni you spoke with at Ranni’s Rise. After telling you to follow the path of the Elden Lord, she’ll vanish, leaving the Dark Moon Greatsword in the process. This is Elden Ring’s version of the Moonlight Greatsword and is one of the better weapons in the game.

(1 of 3) head to the cathedral and carefully drop down the hole

Activate the Secret Ending, Age of the Stars

This final part is completely optional, but for completing these steps, you have fulfilled the conditions for the secret ending, Age of the Stars. Proceed through the game until you defeat the final boss and upon its defeat, you’ll be able to Summon Ranni and activate the ending, thus completely finishing Ranni’s Quest, the longest in the game.

Summon Ranni after defeating the final boss to trigger the Age of Stars Ending.
