Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Gym Test: Olive Roll Challenge

By
Jessica Dillon

When you get to your first gym, you will learn that things work a bit differently in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. Instead of going through a puzzle and a slew of trainers inside the gym, you will now be doing gym challenges. This involves going out into the town and completing a mini-game laced with battles to gain access to the gym leader. The Bug Gym is the first canonical gym in the game as it’s the lowest level and its challenge is a mini-game with optional battles.

Start of the Bug Gym Challenge.

How to Complete the Bug Gym Challenge

This challenge places you in one of the fields outside of Cortondo. Your goal is to roll the giant green olive across the field into a red basket goal. To do this, you simply need to run into the olive and push it in the direction you want it to go.

Rolling The Olive

The goal you need to roll the olive into.

Rolling the giant olive is rather simple, and you can cut your time in the challenge in half by taking on some of the trainers in the field. This will unlock two shortcuts. You will find the first trainer shortly after rolling the olive down its platform and coming across your first obstacle.

The second trainer is located a short ways after this, and defeating them will give you a clear path to the goal. Keep in mind that when rolling the olive over slopes, you will need to stay on top of it. If you don’t constantly push the olive up and over, it will roll back down to the starting position.

Taking shortcuts is your best bet, as there are only two trainers with one bug-type Pokemon each. You can easily beat these with flying, fire, or rock-type moves. If you need a Pokemon that can perform these move types, Then grab a "Starly" IconStarly of "Fletchling" IconFletchling from the area around the Pokemon Center before town.

Shortcut One
Don’t be thrown off by the level "Kricketune" IconKricketune is an easy Pokemon to beat. Simply use an effective move type, and you will make quick work of this Pokemon.

Pokemon Level Type
"Kricketune" IconKricketune 17 Bug

Shortcut Two
"Venonat" IconVenonat can use disable, which can be a bit annoying, so don’t put all your faith into a single move to win the fight. Venonat is a poison and bug-type Pokemon, but the same strategy will still work. Poison is also weak to Psychic and fairy-type moves.

Pokemon Level Type
"Venonat" IconVenonat 13 Bug/Poison

After you push the olive into a goal, you will complete the Bug Gym Challenge and be able to challenge the gym leader Katy by walking back to the gym. For a guide on how to defeat Katy and get Your Bug Gym badge, click here.
