This is a guide for defeating Penny during the Academy Ace Tournament in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

Penny, your classmate, is one of the trainers you can fight in the Academy Ace Tournament. She’s a random participant during the second tournament onwards. She can appear during the first, second and third rounds.

What is the Academy Ace Tournament?¶

The Academy Ace Tournament is a single elimination tournament, consisting of 4 rounds, that you can participate in during the postgame. Your opponents will be trainers and faculty members from Naranja/Uva Academy.

To unlock the Academy Ace Tournament, you must complete the Area Zero story, perform the Gym Inspection for Geeta and report the results to her back at Naranja/Uva Academy.

Recommended Pokémon for Penny (Academy Ace Tournament)¶

Penny has the exact same Eeveelution team that she used during Starfall Street. As such, you should approach this fight with a fairly diverse team.

Her Pokémon are between Level 69 to 70, so you’ll want your Pokémon to be Level 70+.

Here are some recommendations, if you need help:

• The Level 75 Tera Lucario at Dalizapa Passage, in the underground tunnel. High level and a good all-rounder.
• If playing Scarlet, Great Tusk, a Ground and Fighting Paradox found in Area Zero.
• If playing Violet, Iron Treads, a Ground and Steel Paradox found in Area Zero.
• If playing Scarlet, Koraidon, a powerful Dragon and Fighting Legendary obtained in the postgame. Probably a little overkill.
• If playing Violet, Miraidon, a powerful Electric and Dragon Legendary obtained in the postgame. Probably a little overkill.

What Pokémon Does Penny (Academy Ace Tournament) Use?¶

Umbreon¶

Like last time, Penny leads with her trusty Umbreon. It can use Dark Pulse for STAB, Psychic to annoy Fighting types, Baby-Doll Eyes to try and lower your Attack before you can react, and Quick Attack to try and attack first, dealing some chip damage. Its Synchronize ability will pass on any status ailments it’s suffering from to your Pokémon.

Fairy types are ideal. Bug types are great too. Despite Psychic, Fighting should do fine, since Umbreon’s main focus isn’t dealing damage.

Vaporeon¶

This Water type Eeveelution can use Hydro Pump for STAB, Aurora Beam to counter Grass types, and like all of Penny’s Pokémon, Baby-Doll Eyes and Quick Attack. Water Absorb restores Vaporeon’s HP when hit by a Water move.

Go with an Electric type if possible. Grass types are OK, despite the danger of Aurora Beam, since Vaporeon isn’t much of an attacker.

Jolteon¶

This super-speedy Eeveelution can use Thunder for STAB, Pin Missile to tickle Grass types, plus the standard Baby-Doll Eyes and Quick Attack. If inflicted with a status ailment, Jolteon’s Speed will be boosted by Quick Feet. Although it’s probably faster than you already.

Ground types are Jolteon’s bane. If you don’t have one, hit it hard and fast, with priority moves if possible. Jolteon’s speedy, but pretty fragile.

Flareon¶

Flareon can use Flare Blitz for hard-hitting STAB, Fire Spin to trap you, plus the usual Baby-Doll Eyes and Quick Attack. Flash Fire boosts Flareon’s Fire moves if it’s hit by one. You wouldn’t do that though, right?

Water or Rock types are highly recommended. Ground types are good too.

Leafeon¶

Leafeon can use Leaf Blade for STAB, X-Scissor for additional coverage, plus the trademark Baby-Doll Eyes and Quick Attack. Leaf Guard protects it from status ailments during harsh sunlight. It won’t get a chance to use this, unless you trigger harsh sunlight (Koraidon can, when it enters the field).

Fire, Flying, Poison or Bug types should perform very well here. Ice types are good as well.

Terastallized Sylveon¶

For her final performance, Penny will Terastallize her Sylveon into a Fairy type, further enhancing its Fairy moves.

It can use Moonblast for STAB and Tera-boosted damage, Shadow Ball for general coverage, plus the same two moves shared by its family members: Baby-Doll Eyes and Quick Attack. Cute Charm can make your Pokémon infatuated if it’s the opposite gender and it makes physical contact with Sylveon when using its move.

Poison or Steel types are the way to go.
