Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Tera Types & Terastallize

By
Vincent Lau

This page explains how Tera Types and Terastallize work in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and what they can actually do for your Pokémon and team in general.

What are Tera Types?

Tera Types are a “third” type that every Pokémon has. It’s visible in the Pokémon menu, but only for yourself.

In most cases, a Pokémon’s Tera Type is the same as one of their usual Types. For example, you may have a Sprigagito (Grass-type) whose Tera Type is Grass. However, sometimes a Pokémon’s Tera Type can be different. Like an "Eevee" IconEevee (Normal-type) whose Tera Type is Flying.

A Pokémon’s Tera Type has no effect until the Pokémon Terastallizes.

What is Terastallize?

Terastallize is Scarlet & Violet’s new battle gimmick, akin to Mega Evolution, Z-Moves and Dynamax in previous games. When triggered, it transforms the Pokémon into its Tera Type.

All Pokémon can Terastallize. To make a Pokémon Terastallize, you simply press Joy-Con-R when selecting a Pokémon’s moves, when the “Terastallize” icon is available.

When a Pokémon Terastallizes, they will be surrounded by a crystal-like luster and a crown will appear on their head, indicating their Tera Type.

While Terastallized, the Pokémon’s Type(s) will change into its Tera Type. Eg. a Rock and Dark-type "Tyranitar" IconTyranitar can change into a Ghost-type.

In addition, the Terastallized Pokémon’s moves will receive a damage boost if they match the Pokémon’s Tera Type or one of the Pokémon’s original Types. If the move matches both of these, the damage boost will be even higher.

A Tera Orb item is required for Terastallize to be available. Also, after using Terastallize in battle, the Tera Orb will lose its charge. You can recharge it by visiting a shining crystal on the field or a Pokémon Center.
