Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

What are Gimmighouls?

By
Ben Chard

This page explains everything you may wish to know about Gimmighouls in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. These are hidden throughout Paldea and are required for completing the Pokédex.

Roaming Gimmighoul can be found in all kinds of places.

As you travel around Paldea, you may often hear a spooky laughter, this indicates the presence of a Roaming Gimmighoul, one of two types of Gimmighoul you’ll find throughout Paldea.

Roaming Gimmighouls

Roaming Gimmighouls are the most common, and you’ll find them in places such as ruins, Pokémon Centers or even standing on the many signposts throughout the region. When you interact with these Pokémon, you’ll obtain between one and four "Gimmighoul Coin" iconGimmighoul Coins before they run off.

These are used in the evolution for Gimmighoul’s Chest Form, but you’ll need 999+ of them to evolve it, so you’ll need to track down a lot of these Roaming Gimmighouls. Do note, however, you cannot battle a Roaming Gimmighoul so you can’t catch one in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but you may be able to do so in Pokémon Go soon.

Do Roaming Gimmighouls Respawn?

With needed to get 999+ Coins, you may wonder if you have to track down every single Roaming Gimmighoul? The answer is an emphatic no, as the Roaming Gimmighouls will respawn in the same locations after some time has passed. Even better yet, there are alternatives to getting more Coins at once!

Gimmighoul Chests

The second type of Gimmighoul are the Gimmighoul Chests, and you’ll often find them situated at the top of Watchtowers or other well-hidden parts of Paldea. These are easy to identify, as they look like a typical chest that wouldn’t look out of place in a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.

Once you find one, interact with it and you’ll be thrust into battle against a Gimmighoul Chest. Note that you can catch Gimmighoul Chests, so try to catch the first one you come across if at all possible as they’re not overly difficult to deal with.

More importantly, once you defeat a Gimmighoul Chest, you’ll be awarded between 50-60 Gimmighoul Coins! This will make your life a lot easier when trying to farm the 999+ needed for the evolution.

Do Gimmighoul Chests Respawn?

With Gimmighoul Chests offering up 50-60 Coins, you may be wondering if you can just farm the same chest over and over to get the task over quickly. Each day, each Gimmighoul Chest Form has a 5% chance of respawning.

With plenty of them scattered all over Paldea, this is by far the best method of obtaining all 999+ Gimmighoul Coins needed for the Gholdengo evolution. To find all of these chests, head on over to our All Gimmighoul Chest locations page.
