Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Beat Hearthome City Gym

By
Vincent Lau

This is a walkthrough for Hearthome City Gym in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

(1 of 2) When you first arrive at Hearthome City, the lift will be out of commission.

Hearthome City Gym is the 5th gym in the game. During your first visit to Hearthome City, the gym will be closed. Once you’ve visited Celestic Town and obtained HM Surf, the gym will be back open for business.

The gym itself is Ghost-themed and centers around the scariest concept imaginable: a Maths quiz *faints*.

…….

Oh, we’re still alive! Sorry to keep you all waiting!

How to Reach the Gym Leader

From the entrance, go forth and step on the platform lift to reach the upper level. Ahead, there will be a sign post with a simple Maths question: “What is 3 plus 5 plus 7? The three doors at the back correspond to the choices: Left (2), Center (16) and Right (15).

The correct answer is Right (15). However, if you’ve got time and want to earn more experience points, you can go through the wrong doors first. Each wrong door you enter, you’ll arrive at a dead-end room where a trainer will immediately battle you.

After entering the correct door, you’ll emerge in a room similar to the entrance, but with a signpost congratulating your right answer. Head forward and step onto the next platform lift. Above, you’ll find a similar setup as before. “What is 12 plus 28?” The correct answer is Center (40).

(1 of 2) Going through the wrong doors will allow you to fight the gym trainers.

Going through the wrong doors will allow you to fight the gym trainers. (left), Two of the gym trainers have Drifloon, which is a hard-to-find Pokémon. (right)

After going through the center door, step on the next platform lift and prepare for the third Maths question. “What is 3 times 13?” The correct answer is Left (39). When you’re ready, head through the Left door and use the platform lift there. The final question is there to trip up people who weren’t paying attention! The answer is Right (15).

Head through the right door and you’ll come face to face with Fantina, the Gym Leader.
