How to Defeat Gym Leader Volkner

By
Vincent Lau

Need help fighting Gym Leader Volkner? This page has strategies and tips to deal with him.

Volkner is the 8th and final Gym Leader, waiting at the end of Sunyshore City Gym. Electric-type Pokémon are his forte.

Despite being the Electric Gym Leader, Volkner only has two Electric-types in his team.

First up is "Raichu" IconRaichu. This evolved "Pikachu" IconPikachu can use Nuzzle to paralyze, Volt Switch to pivot out, Charge Beam to potentially raise its Special Attack and Surf to mess with Ground-types. Note that Raichu has a Chople Berry, so your first Ground attack will be weakened. Despite everything, we’d suggest a Ground-type, especially if they’re "Torterra" IconTorterra, "Quagsire" IconQuagsire or "Gastrodon" IconGastrodon, since they’re unafraid of Surf.

"Ambipom" IconAmbipom is not an Electric-type, but it knows Thunderbolt. Besides that, it’s got Fake Out to go first and cause a flinch on the first turn (powered up by Technician), Double Hit and Last Resort, the latter only usable after using its other three moves at least once. Since it’s a Normal-type, Fighting-types are king, but note that Ambipom has a Chople Berry, weakening your first Fighting move.

(1 of 2) Luxray’s Intimidate will weaken physical attacks slightly.

"Octillery" IconOctillery is definitely not an Electric-type, but it can use Charge Beam. Additionally, it’s carrying Octazooka for STAB, Aurora Beam to pester Grass-types and Focus Energy to boost its Critical rate (which will aid its Sniper ability). Your best bet is to field your own Electric-type. Grass-types should do OK, but avoid Torterra since it’s double-weak to Aurora Beam.

Volkner’s final Pokémon is "Luxray" IconLuxray–a fully evolved "Shinx" IconShinx and an actual Electric-type at last. This one can use Thunder Fang for STAB, Ice Fang to hurt Ground-types, Crunch for extra coverage and Iron Tail for a similar reason. It’s also holding a Sitrus Berry to restore HP and has Intimidate, which lowers your Attack. Annoyingly, there aren’t many safe options besides Gastrodon and Quagsire.

After the Fight

Having shocked Volkner, you’ll receive his Beacon Badge, which grants usage of HM Waterfall outside of battle and makes all traded Pokémon obey you, regardless of their Level. He’ll also hand you a stack of TM57 Charge Beam.

Now that you have all 8 of Sinnoh’s gym badges, you can challenge the Pokémon League, which is conveniently not far away from Sunyshore City. Head down to the ground level and then make your way to the beach to the right of the gym. If you didn’t meet her earlier, chat to Jasmine at the beach and you’ll receive some copies of TM99 Waterfall and HM Waterfall.

Once you’re ready, depart Sunyshore City by proceeding north from the bridge, towards Route 223.
