Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Find Each Fishing Rod in BDSP

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers a guide on how to find all fishing rod types in Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP). The fishing rods are required for fishing and the better the rod the better your chances of catching good pokémon.

How to Get Old Rod

To get Old Rod, which is the first fishing rod you’ll be able to obtain, you’ll need to talk to the Fisherman at the west gate of Jubilife City, which heads into Route 218. Jubilife City is accessible pretty much from the beginning so you can get the Old Rod as early as you’d like.

How to Get Good Rod

If you want a better rod, then you’ll want to look into obtaining the Good Rod! To get the Good Rod, you’ll need to talk to the fisherman on the dock in Route 209, nearby the Hearthome City gate.

How to Get Super Rod

The Super Rod is the best fishing rod in the game, but to get it, you’ll need to do a fair bit of work! First off, you’ll need to finish the game, which includes defeating the Elite Four and Cynthia. And then, you’ll also need to obtain the National Pokédex, which requires seeing every Pokémon in the Sinnoh Region Dex.

After you’ve done all that, head to the Fight Area, found in the northeast region of the map. Here, you’ll find another Fisherman NPC, near Route 225, who will give you the Super Rod. With the Super Rod, you’ll be able to catch some strong pokémons like Gyrados!

How to Go Fishing in BDSP

To fish, you’ll need to first find a body of water and then face it. Then, select a Rod from your Key Items inventory and choose to use it. This will throw out your fishing line into the water. If there’s pokémon around, you may have one bite the line. When they bite the bait, which is indicated by an exclamation point above your character’s head, press A to battle them. If you don’t press A quick enough they’ll swim away!

When you’re in battle, you’ll have a chance to catch them if you want.
