How to Defeat Gym Leader Byron

By

Need help fighting Gym Leader Byron? This page has strategies and tips to deal with him.

Byron is the 6th Gym Leader, waiting at the top of Canalave City Gym. He’s Roark’s father and a master of Steel-type Pokémon.

There aren’t many Steel-types in Sinnoh, but Byron has fortunately managed to muster up three for his team.

"Bronzor" IconBronzor is a pretty easy warm up, since it’s not evolved. It can use Flash Cannon for STAB, Confuse Ray to make your Pokémon confused, Sandstorm to damage those that aren’t Rock/Ground/Steel-types and Trick Room to reverse the speed order.

Of the lot, Confuse Ray is probably the most annoying, although if it sets up Trick Room, you may be disadvantaged since all of Byron’s Pokémon are slow. Fire, Ghost or Dark-types are recommended. Not Ground because of Levitate.

(1 of 2) Like his son, Byron has a fossil Pokémon as his ace.

"Steelix" IconSteelix can use Gyro Ball and Earthquake for STAB, Sandstorm like Bronzor and Thunder Fang to strike back at Water-types. Be cautious of its Sturdy ability, which prevents it from being one-shot. Despite the mild danger from Thunder Fang, Water-types are ideal here. Fire-types will take heavy damage from Earthquake and most Fighting and Ground-types are physical and must deal with Steelix’s massive Defense.

Finally, "Bastiodon" IconBastiodon is an evolved "Shieldon" IconShieldon (the other fossil Pokémon found in Sinnoh). Byron’s can use Stone Edge and Flash Cannon for STAB, Thunderbolt to poke Water-types and Iron Defense to bolster its Defense. Like Steelix, it has the Sturdy ability and also a Sitrus Berry to restore HP. Ground and Fighting-types are ideal here, since they deal quadruple damage. Otherwise, you could try Water.

After the fight

Stand your ground against Byron’s steely resolve and you’ll earn his Mine Badge, allowing the user of HM Strength outside of battle and, also, traded Pokémon up to Level 70 will fully obey you. Besides that, Byron will give you a stack of TM91 Flash Cannon.

To exit the gym, step on the yellow-lined platform to the right of Byron, then follow the subsequent platforms located at the corners of the building.

When you step foot outside of the gym, your rival will tell you to visit Canalave Library, near the north-west corner of the city. If you’ve got nothing else planned, head to the top floor of the library. You’ll be invited to a study session with Professor Rowan, his assistant and your rival.

Afterwards, your next task is to visit Lake Valor, which was previously blocked. You can get there by heading south from Veilstone City or east from Pastoria City.
