Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Get Gible & Garchomp

By
Vincent Lau

This page explains how to catch "Gible" IconGible and obtain "Garchomp" IconGarchomp in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

After experiencing the might of Cynthia’s Garchomp, you might be tempted to get one of your own. To do so, you’ll first need to catch one of its unevolved forms: Gible or "Gabite" IconGabite.

Gible Location

(1 of 2) Roam around the basement of Wayward Cave…

If you want to start from the beginning, Gible can be encountered at the basement level of Wayward Cave. You can reach the basement once you’ve earned the right to use HM Strength, which is after the 6th gym leader.

Once you’re at the basement, it’s not actually too hard to find Gible. The tiny Dragon and Ground-type has a 15% encounter rate, which isn’t high, but not ridiculously low either. To catch it, you can use Dusk or Ultra Balls after weakening it. Since it’s Ground-type, you can’t use the likes of Thunder Wave to paralyze it.

Otherwise, if you can wait a bit longer, after the 7th gym leader, Gible can appear in the following hideaways in the Grand Underground:

The quickest way to search for Gible is to repeatedly enter and exit the same hideaway. Each time you enter a hideaway, a new selection of Pokémon will spawn. After Gible appears, save your game inside the hideway. That way, if you accidentally faint it, you can reload and try again.

Gabite Location

(1 of 2) Gabite can appear in Fountainspring Cave.

Alternatively, you can try and catch Gabite, the middle evolution. This is only possible after obtaining HM Waterfall, after the 8th gym leader.

From that point, Gabite can appear in the exact same hideaways as Gible:

Likewise, we suggest repeatedly entering and exiting the same hideaway, to refresh the Pokémon that spawn. After Gabite appears, save your game while inside the hideway. Just in case something goes wrong, so you can reload your save file and try again.

How to Get Garchomp

(1 of 2) If you’re lazy, you can use Rare Candies if Gible/Gabite are high Level.

After obtaining Gible or Gabite, your next task is to level it up. Gible will evolve into Gabite at Level 24; Gabite will evolve into Garchomp at Level 48.

If you caught Gible at Wayward Cave, this can take a while since it starts at Level 15 to 17. The only thing you can really do is keep Gible in your party, so it gains experience via the Exp. Share. After reaching the snowy area, you can grab a Lucky Egg from the Underground to speed things up.

Meanwhile, if you caught Gible or Gabite from the Grand Underground, it’ll be Level 40+, so you won’t have long to go.
