This is a walkthrough for Oreburgh Gate, including what Pokémon you can encounter and items you can find.

Oreburgh Gate is a small cavern that connects Route 203 with Oreburgh City. During your first visit, there isn’t much to see. But after you’ve earned the right to use HM Rock Smash, you can explore the sizable basement level.

How to Obtain HM Rock Smash

Near the entrance, when you go forward a short distance, a Hiker will stop you. He’ll give you a stack of TM98 Rock Smash and add the Hidden Move Rock Smash to your Pokétch. This can be used to break small cracked rocks, like the ones found in Oreburgh Gate.

During your initial visit, there’s only path available to you: directly east. Next to the Hiker who gave you Rock Smash, there’s a path leading north, but you need to use Rock Smash to continue. Anyway, towards the east, there are two trainers you can battle for experience before the next gym. Or you can avoid them by going behind them.

Once you’ve obtained the Coal Badge, be sure to check out the north path, which leads to the basement.

How to Navigate Oreburgh Gate (B1F)

Even with Rock Smash, you won’t be able to explore the whole basement. But there’s something useful you can obtain here. From the initial stairs, head south, down some steps, then squeeze through the nearby path on the right, smashing two cracked rocks along the way. Jump down from the ledge near the corner and pick up the TM70 Flash before the next ledge.

You can teach Flash to certain Pokémon and use it from the Pokémon menu to light up dark caves. For now, jump down the second ledge and go around back towards the previous steps. This time, head west along the upper path, using Rock Smash to clear a path. After the third rock, there’s a Cyclist just loitering around. Go around and grab the Stardust nearby.

(1 of 2) Use Rock Smash to destroy the cracked rocks.

That’s probably it for now. If you don’t have a Bike or HM Surf and HM Strength, exit the basement (with an Escape Rope for instance).

Otherwise, if you have the Bike, switch to fourth gear and leap over the ramp near the Cyclist. Then leap over the next ramp. You can then go and grab the TM31 Brick Break near the corner. If you don’t have Surf, go south, then smash the nearby rock on the right. You can then use the ramp to clear the rocks and exit the area on foot. (Or use an Escape Rope.)

Meanwhile, if you have both HM Surf and HM Strength, you can swim west towards an isolated area. When you land, there’s a good chance you’ll be spotted by a battle-thirsty Veteran. Past him, walk down the steps and use Strength to shove the boulder all the way left. Near the bottom, grab the Earth Plate. Next, go up and use Rock Smash to break the cracked rock.

Finally, push the last boulder left or right, but not up. If you accidentally pushed it up, you need to leave and re-enter the basement to reset the boulder. Past the boulder is TM01 Focus Punch.
