How to Defeat Gym Leader Crasher Wake

By

Need help fighting Gym Leader Crasher Wake? This page has strategies and tips to deal with him.

Crasher Wake is the 4th gym leader, found at the end of Pastoria City Gym. As a reminder, he’s the Water-type expert.

Crasher Wake doesn’t hold any punches and will lead with "Gyarados" IconGyarados. It can use Brine for STAB (dealing more damage if the foe has below half HP), Ice Fang to deter Grass-types, Crunch for additional coverage and Flail for good measure. Its Intimidate will lower your Attack at the start. Electric-types are strongly recommended, since they deal quadruple damage.

Next up is "Quagsire" IconQuagsire. This one is carrying Scald for Water-type STAB and to potentially burn, Mud Shot for Ground-type STAB and to lower Speed, Haze to cancel stat changes and Rain Dance to cause 8 turns of rain with its Damp Rock. Unlike Gyarados, Quagsire is more utility/defensive-based. To avoid rain being summoned, quickly KO it with Grass-types.

"Floatzel" IconFloatzel is Wake’s final Pokémon. It’s not as intimidating as Gyarados, but it has some annoying tricks. Like Gyarados, it knows Brine and Ice Fang. Besides that, it’s got Bite to potentially flinch and Aqua Jet to attack first. If Quagsire set up rain, you’ll be in for a rough time, since it’ll power up Floatzel’s Water moves and trigger Swift Swim, boosting its Speed.

Your primary choices are Electric or Grass-types. Electric-types are the safer choice, since Grass-types will take considerable damage from Ice Fang. However, it may end up a very close match regardless. If your Pokémon is at low HP, don’t forget that Floatzel can use Aqua Jet to snipe them. Instead, heal up your current Pokémon or heal a different Pokémon and let your current Pokémon faint

After the Fight

Succeed in riding out Crasher Wake’s waves and you’ll be rewarded with his Fen Badge. Now you can use HM Defog outside of battle. Additionally, he’ll unload a stack of TM55 Brine on you.
