This is a walkthrough for Route 228, including what Pokémon you can encounter and items you can find.
Route 228 is a postgame route accessible by heading east from Route 226 or north from Route 229. It’s a long vertical route with a constant sandstorm.
Move Tutor: Ultimate Moves¶
In the northern half of the route, just before the halfway point, there’s a house towards the east. Inside, an old man will teach certain powerful moves for fully evolved starter Pokémon from all regions.
Move | Description | Eligible Pokémon |
---|---|---|
Frenzy Plant | An extremely powerful Grass-type move that requires recharging. | Venusaur, Meganium, Sceptile, Torterra |
Blast Burn | An extremely powerful Fire-type move that requires recharging. | Charizard, Typhlosion, Blaziken, Infernape |
Hydro Cannon | An extremely powerful Water-type move that requires recharging. | Blastoise, Feraligatr, Swampert, Empoleon |
How to Navigate Route 228¶
This guide assumes you came from Route 226. After leaving the gatehouse, take a moment for your eyes to adjust to the sandstorm. First, head north-east and battle the Ace Trainer or sneak behind him. Search above him to find a hidden PP Up. Next slide down the nearby slope to the east. Grab the Protector at the bottom, then ride your bicycle back up the slope.
Travel south for a bit, stopping when you reach the top of a muddy slope. Search above the slope for a Rare Candy. If you want, go south-west and battle the two trainers nearby, before reaching the tall grass. To proceed, slide down the slope where the Rare Candy was and make your way east. At the end, ride your bicycle up the next slope.
From here, if you want to fight a Dragon Tamer, head north-east and ride up the slope over there. Otherwise, head south along the narrow path underneath the long, narrow bridge. Scoop up the Iron on the right. Moving on, head west, then south along the side of the house. If you enter this house, you can teach your starter Pokémon an “ultimate move” (see above).
Anyway, go west from the house. Climb up the stairs nearby and use Rock Smash to break one of the cracked rocks that’s in the way. Squeeze through and retrieve the Shed Shell at the end. Return to the bottom of the stairs, then proceed directly south. When you’ve gone past the two trees next to a pond, there’s a small rock next to a mini hill. Search this rock for a hidden Ultra Ball.
Next, head east, then south. You’ll have to fight a pair of dedicated Pokémon Rangers. If you prefer, you can skip them by riding the narrow bridges beyond the Dragon Tamer from earlier. Past the Rangers, check out the space towards the left. In the bottom-left corner is a TM37 Sandstorm, which makes a nice souvenir. Meanwhile, the top-left corner has a hidden Stardust.
Once you’re done here, carry on south along the east side. After squeezing through the tight path, ride up the slope on the left. Then go around and ride the narrow bridge towards the east, where a Shiny Stone awaits. Return to the ground level and continue south. Towards the right, you’ll be ambushed by an Ace Trainer. There’s no way to avoid her, unless you came here from Route 229 instead.
After passing the Ace Trainer, ride up the slope to the left. Over here, there’s more tall grass. North from the stairs, there are some berry plants. North-west from there is a house with nothing of note. Towards the south-corner of this section, search the tall grass to discover a hidden Full Restore. To wrap things up, go up the nearby stairs on the right and ride across the narrow bridge on your trusty bicycle.
On the other side, search the wall near the bottom-right corner of the big rock for a hidden Calcium. When you’re ready to depart, return to the slope that led you up here. Slide back down, then make your way south to leave this route, towards Route 229. By the way, if you head north from the left side of the last stairs, you’ll run into a Psychic.
