Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Useful Items & Abilities for Breeding

By
Vincent Lau

This page explains everything that can help with breeding in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

Depending on your goal, you may not need all of these things. Still, the knowledge would be useful to have.

Everstone

(1 of 2) Everstones can be found while digging underground.

Everstones can be found while digging underground. (left), There’s also a guaranteed Everstone in Snowpoint City. (right)

This hold item prevents Pokémon from evolving, but it has a secret function. If a Pokémon holds an Everstone, it will always pass down its Nature to its offspring.

Without an Everstone, the offspring will have a completely random Nature. Therefore, if you desire a specific Nature, you’ll want one of these.

You can dig up Everstone from the Grand Underground, although they’re rare. If you’re patient, you can obtain one from a girl in Snowpoint City, by trading a "Medicham" IconMedicham for her "Haunter" IconHaunter with an Everstone.

Destiny Knot

Destiny Knot near the end of Route 224.

If a Pokémon holding this becomes infatuated, the Pokémon that triggered the effect will also become infatuated. But like many other items, it has a secret function…

So long as one of the parents is holding a Destiny Knot, the offspring will inherit a total of 5 IVs from its parents, instead of the usual 3–this is a big difference!

Pokémon with the Pick Up ability have a 1% chance of finding a Destiny Knot when they’re Level 21 or higher. After obtaining the National Pokédex, you can obtain a guaranteed Destiny Knot from Route 224, accessible via the east exit of Victory Road.

A Ditto (or Multiple)

(1 of 2) Ditto in Dazzling Cave.

Ditto in Dazzling Cave. (left), Ditto at Route 218. (right)

One of "Ditto" IconDitto’s useful properties is that it can breed with any Pokémon that can normally breed. In this scenario, it can substitute for the male or female Pokémon.

This can be useful when breeding a particular species that has a larger chance of being male, so you don’t need to find a female of that species.

Ditto can be found in Dazzling Cave and Stargleam Cavern hideaways after obtaining the National Pokédex. They’re also found on Route 218, using the Poké Radar. If you chain Ditto using the Poké Radar for long enough, you can get one with max IVs in one or more random stats.

There are two reasons for wanting multiple Ditto. One, if you have Ditto with various Natures, it’s more convenient for passing down Natures. Two, unless you’re lucky, you probably won’t have one Ditto with max IVs in every stat you want. Therefore you’ll need multiple Ditto to cover different stats.

Oval Charm

(1 of 2) You can fight Morimoto once you’re the Champ.

You can fight Morimoto once you’re the Champ. (left), His reward, the Oval Charm boosts the rate of obtaining eggs. (right)

This key item will speed up the rate of receiving eggs from the Pokémon Nursery.

You can get the Oval Charm as a reward from beating Morimoto on Route 213, who’s chilling inside the swimming pool, after you’ve become the Champion.

Shiny Charm

This Key Item will provide two additional chances for a Pokémon to be shiny.

You’ll need to do a lot of work to get the Shiny Charm though: it requires catching all 493 Pokémon in the National Pokédex. Should you achieve this feat, speak to the director at the westernmost hotel building in Valor Lakefront.

If you have access to other Pokémon games and you’re patient, you could wait until Pokémon HOME support is added in 2022. That way, you can transfer over Pokémon from other games.

Pokémon with a Different Language Tag

(1 of 2) This hiker living on Route 226 will trade a Magikarp for your Finneon.

This hiker living on Route 226 will trade a Magikarp for your Finneon. (left), His Magikarp is German; by breeding it, you’ll have a higher chance of hatching a shiny Magikarp. (right)

If you don’t have the Shiny Charm, don’t worry too much, because it’s not nearly as important as getting one of these babies.

When you breed a Pokémon with another Pokémon that has a different language tag compared to it, the game will give you five additional chances for a Pokémon to be shiny. This bonus can also stack with the Shiny Charm.

To get you started, there’s a Hiker on Route 226 who’ll trade a German "Magikarp" IconMagikarp for a bog-standard "Finneon" IconFinneon.

Pokémon that Speed up Egg Hatching

(1 of 2) You can find Camerupt and the other Fire-types in the Grand Underground.

You can find Camerupt and the other Fire-types in the Grand Underground. (left), The description makes no mention of speeding up egg hatching, but that’s what it does! (right)

After receiving your egg, you can double the rate of egg hatching if you have a party Pokémon with one of the following Abilities: Flame Body or Magma Armor.

Note that these Abilities do not stack with each other or themselves, so you only need one, not a whole gang of ’em!

Common Pokémon that fit this bill include the "Magby" IconMagby line, "Slugma" IconSlugma line and "Camerupt" IconCamerupt.

Judge Function

(1 of 2) Chat to this Scientist to unlock the Judge function.

The Judge function is indispensable for determining whether your Pokémon are keepers are not, by letting you check their IVs.

To unlock the Judge function, you must have beaten the game first. After taking the ferry from Snowpoint City to the Fight Area, make your way towards the Battle Tower. Inside the tower, speak to the Scientist in the bottom-right corner to get the goods.

Once it’s unlocked, you can press the + or - button when inspecting your Pokémon boxes to cycle to the Judge display.
