Diablo IV

Diablo 4 Echo of Varshan Boss Fight Walkthrough

By
Craig Robinson

Varshan is the new threat in Diablo 4 Season 1, with the echo fight being the new, repeatable boss fight for players to push and progress in Malignant Tunnels. If you intend on fighting this boss, here are a few tips and tricks on how to summon and beat the Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4.

How To Summon The Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4

Use your Invoker of Varshan on Monstrous Growths to summon the boss.

If you want to take on the Echo of Varshan, you need to do the following:

  • Complete the Season 1 campaign and defeat Varshan with Cormond.
  • Go into Malignant Tunnels and look for a wooden gate with a padlock on it. This indicated a boss room is accessible for those wanting to fight Varshan.
  • Use the Invoker of Varshan in a Malignant Tunnel on either World Tier 1 or 2. You get one for free for beating the Campaign. The rest you need to craft at a Malignant Research Station.

Once you have the recipe, you will need to use 50 Sigil Powder, and a Invoker of Varshan to craft the Foul version. This enables you to spawn Varshan as you progress through Diablo 4’s endgame in World Tier 3/4.

How To Beat The Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4

(1 of 2) One of the more brutal mechanics of the fight is to manage killing the Elites to prevent a barrier restoration on the boss.

One of the more brutal mechanics of the fight is to manage killing the Elites to prevent a barrier restoration on the boss. (left), Players must dodge highlighted ground attacks, typically a line, or these large triangles that coat the room. (right)

Okay, now onto the strategy of taking down the Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4: There are a few tricks you need to be wary of:

  • Attack patterns: The boss sends out tentacles that attack you at range, so always be mindful of side-stepping attacks regardless of range.
  • Charge: The boss will fling itself over to your position using its tentacles to charge you down. Another dodge mechanic
  • Floor Hazards: From time to time, you will see sections of the floor become highlighted. These can either be lines around the boss going towards. Or triangles on the four corners of the boss. They typically happen one after another, which is designed to make players dodge and move closer to the boss, ready for those close-range tentacle swipes.
  • Barrier: The boss will occasionally give itself a Barrier. This normally signifies three lites spawning around it. These Elites will then be sacrificed one by one to empower the bosses’ shields, indicated by the sewage-water-looking beam connecting the boss and the elite together. If the Elite enemy is successfully sacrificed, then the boss will gain more Barrier. Typically, you want to focus on the Elites not being sacrificed, as that will deny extra sacrificial lambs to boost the barrier, essentially making the fight last a shorter amount of time.

World Tier 3 Mechanics:
On World Tier 3 version, the boss will also do the following moves and be level 60:

  • Ground Highlights: The boss will do another type of ground highlighted damage area for you to avoid. The boss essentially spins the ground marker anti-clockwise from its position, with a new one creeping around him in a circle whenever one goes off. You pretty much just have to keep moving and trading attacks whenever you are safe from the next explosion.
  • Poison Blasts: The boss can use its tentacles to swipe three times, if you hit with these hits, or the projectiles that fly outwards from it, you will take some heavy poison damage.

World Tier 4 Mechanics:
The Tormented Version of Varshan also adds a few more mechanics to the stuff you see on the base fight and on WT3. These include.

  • Blinding: If you get hit by the tentacle swipe, then you are blinded for several seconds, preventing you from attacking, and lowering your vision range. So, do be careful with that skill, or run away from the boss if you do happen to be hit by hit.
  • Ground Attacks: The boss adds a few extra line attacks on the floor when it does it triangle and outer facing floor blasts. This makes it even harder to find space to dodge. However, the far end of the room is unaffected, so, take a movement skill as that can make it easier to dodge the mechanics.

If your build is very good at killing bosses and elites, the only thing you really need to be mindful of is dodging the close-range attacks and the occasional beam. The Elites and the Barrier shouldn’t be much of a trouble for you. If your build struggles with killing Elites (such as my Chain Lightning Shock build), then just continue to hit the boss as normal and melt through the barrier the best you can. Chances are the fight will take several minutes, so, you need to manage your potions more carefully and be mindful of your defensive capabilities, and doge as often as you can to make the fight more manageable.

If you’re struggling with the Barrier mechanic, the best strategy is to honestly pair up with a Twisting Blades or Penetrating Shot Rogue, or a Werebear Druid in that case. Most Rogue and Druids can handle Elite and Boss killing rather fine. A Bone Spear Necro is also fine to play too. There are other builds out there, but, these are the ones that stick in mind the most.

Once you defeat the boss, you will get your hands on several pieces of gear like most bosses. Moreso, you will also acquire Ichor, essentially partially refunding the cost of creating an Invoker in the first place. You will also get one Caged Heart, which could be any from the Malignant Heart List. You’re likely to get rarer one of those if you take the better quality malignant hearts from the Smoldering Ashes seasonal buff.

Hopefully, these help you take down the Echo of Varshan fight in Diablo 4, helping you figure out how to beat the Season 1 boss.
