Diablo IV

How to Complete the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon

By
Nathan Garvin

The Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon is another unique Dungeon in Diablo 4 in that you can only complete it once per character. It serves as a trial that must be completed before you can unlock World Tier 4 (Torment difficulty). This page will provide a walkthrough for the Fallen Temple, including what objectives you must complete to finish the Dungeon and general tips for surviving the Capstone Dungeon.

(1 of 1) You can find the !Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon along the eastern edge of the Chambatar Ridge subregion in the Dry Steppes.

How to Enter the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon in Diablo 4

As soon as you unlock World Tier 3 (Nightmare difficulty) you’ll be able to access the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon, which can be found along the eastern edge of the Chambatar Ridge subregion in the Dry Steppes. There is no prerequisite to enter this Dungeon, the listed level 70 isn’t a requirement, but it is a warning. Enemies inside the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon will always be a minimum level of 70, and the closer you are to this level, the easier conquering this dungeon will be… even if it’s for no other reason than the extra Life you’ll have at higher levels (the difference in Life maximums between a level 60 and a level 70 character will likely be at least 1000 Life).

Some classes - especially those with high single-target DPS like Rogues and tankier classes like Druid or Barbarian - may find this Capstone Dungeon easier than other classes and consequently be able to tackle it at a lower level. In general, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got legendary or unique with mods relevant to your build in every equipment slot, and socketing gems and using elixirs to boost your fire resistance will help with the boss.

Once you’re prepared and are ready to test your mettle, enter the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon and work on completing the following objectives:

  • Enter the Antechamber of the Damned and choose your path
  • Investigate The Cursed Halls
  • Destroy the Idol of the Fallen Temple
  • Return the Stone Carving to the Pedestal
  • Investigate the Gluttonous Chapel
  • Survive the Trial of the Weak
  • Return the Bloodstone to the Pedestal
  • Travel to the Cathedral of Flesh
  • Collect Animus from the Cannibals
  • Deposit Animus into the Animus Urn
  • Defeat Elias, Hatred’s Remnant

How to Clear the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon in Diablo 4

The first step in this Dungeon is pretty simple - head to the antechamber, which is a sort of hub area for the first two-thirds of the dungeon, and pick one of two seals - the one to the northeast leads to The Cursed Halls and the one to the northwest leads to the Gluttonous Chapel. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose first, you’ll have to clear both to continue to the third area.

How to Complete the Cursed Halls and the Gluttonous Chapel

In the Cursed Halls, you’ll find yourself fighting "Carver" iconCarvers, "Fallen" iconFallen, and Vile Ones, which are all just variants of the same type of enemy. Breaking up the monotony you’ll find Succubi, "Bilefiend" iconBilefiends, and "Flesh Thresher" iconFlesh Threshers as well as the odd "Oppressor" iconOppressor. Killing enemies is a means to an end, but not an end in and of itself - your goal is to fight your way into a chamber where you’ll find the Idol of the Fallen Temple, a construct that will summon Fallen-type enemies until it’s destroyed. Once you enter the chamber you can’t leave until the idol is destroyed or you falter in your task. Be wary, as the Idol is particularly fond of summoning Lunatics, which explode when approached, and some will be summoned ready to explode from the outset. If you’re too low level, one of these imps popping may be lethal. Once you destroy the Idol, defeat one more Elite fallen, then prize a Stone Carving from the wreckage and return to the antechamber. Install the Stone Carving on a pedestal and the way to the Gluttonous Chapel will open up.

(1 of 2) While it may not be glamourous, you can survive the Trial of the Weak just by running out the clock.

While it may not be glamourous, you can survive the Trial of the Weak just by running out the clock. (left), However you survive, you’ll be able to claim a Bloodstone afterwards. (right)

The Gluttonous Chapel features a different roster of enemies, mostly with cannibals (Fanatics, Ravagers Punishers, and Crushers) substituting Fallen, while accompanied by the same demons (Bilefiends, Flesh Threshers, Succubi, and Oppressors). Once again your goal is to reach a small chamber where a Demonic Barrier awaits your scrutiny, and after examining it you’ll need to Survive the Trial of the Weak. To do this, simply don’t die - a horde of demons will attack, but you’ll mostly be dealing with Bilefiends and Flesh Threshers for most of the duration, with stronger enemies only arriving when the timer is three-quarters of the way full. It should be noted that you don’t actually have to kill much of anything here, just running around until the timer is up will suffice. However you managed it, once you survive the trial, pick up the Bloodstone that drops and return it to its pedestal in the antechamber.

Once both the Stone Carving from the Cursed Halls and the Bloodstone from the Gluttonous Chapel have been mounted on pedestals, the way to the third area, the Cathedral of Flesh (southeast) will open up.

(1 of 3) Seek out and slay several Elite cannibals in the Cathedral of Flesh.

How to Collect Animus from the Cannibals

Make your way downstairs to the Cathedral of Flesh, which is ripe with Fallen Ones (and variants), Cannibals, and demons - basically a mix of everything you fought in the previous two areas. If you’ve completed pretty much any Dungeon you should be familiar with the next objective - several Elite enemies (in this case always Cannibals) will drop Animus when defeated, and you’ll need to hunt them down, kill them, pick up the Animus orbs, and deposit it in an Animus Urn. The Cannibals you need to headhunt are as follows:

  • Vodgundr Rotthruster (Poison Enchanted, Cold Enchanted)
  • Losgof Flamemaw (Fire Enchanted, Shadow Enchanted)
  • Bemkeilr Coldclaw (Tempest, Cold Enchanted)
  • Gelalk Mindbreaker (Terrifying, Plaguebearer)
  • Bhasgar Boltcrawler (Shock Lance, Teleporter)

These are bog-standard Elites, but as "Gorger" iconGorger variants they’ve got a great deal of health and if you’re on the weaker side, their absurdly powerful charge attack may be able to one-shot you. This is the first real challenge in this Capstone Dungeon, and if these Elites are giving you trouble, that’s not a good sign for the upcoming boss fight. Scour the area for these cannibals and cut them down, then seek out the aforementioned Animus Urn and interact with it - as long as the progress bar for the Collect Animus from the Cannibals quest phase is done you should fill it up and open the door to this dungeon’s boss… after you kill two named Disciples of Elias, who should be pushovers compared to the Cannibals you just smote.

(1 of 2) Defeat Elias in the bowels of the !Fallen Temple,

Defeat Elias in the bowels of the !Fallen Temple, (left), and you’ll earn the right to ascend to World Tier 4 difficulty. (right)

Defeat Elias, Hatred’s Remnant

After defeating the disciples, head downstairs and you’ll find an arena, and after a moment Elias, Disciple of Hatred should grace you with his presence. This guy was kind of a joke (albeit a tedious one) during the main campaign, but this variant means business. He’s the guardian of World Tier 4 (Torment difficulty), and he’s strong enough to ensure you’re ready for the final World Tier. High fire resistance will help with this fight, but most of his attacks aren’t that difficult to dodge (assuming you’re using a keyboard, anyway - controllers can be a bit… finicky.) Most of his attacks involve him shooting fire bolts at you in various patterns, broken up by various summoning rituals that require you to avoid areas indicated on the ground to prevent heavy (perhaps even lethal) damage.

The differences in this fight between a prepared character and an underpowered one are stark, and you’re really going to want to ensure you have fully upgraded gear (ideally Sacred Legendaries or Uniques) that are socketed with flawless gems (putting diamonds or rubies in your jewelry to boost your resistances isn’t a bad idea). A level 63 Sorceress with decent - not great - gear had trouble whittling Elias down to half his health before some one-shot damage spike inevitably ended the attempt, but returning with tuned, upgraded gear at level 67 allowed us to wipe Elias out during a single stagger bar.

After you defeat Elias, you’ll have earned the right to visit the World Tier Statue in "Kyovashad" iconKyovashad and switch to World Tier 4 (Torment difficulty). This is where the game really begins!
