Diablo IV

How to Survive World Tier 3 in Diablo 4

By
Nathan Garvin

World Tier 3 (Nightmare difficulty) is a significant step up in terms of challenge… but it also provides ample opportunity to empower your character beyond what you can achieve in World Tier 1 (Adventurer) and World Tier 2 (Veteran). This page will provide helpful tips on how to bridge the gap between these aforementioned lower difficulties and Nightmare difficulty.

What Level Should You Be For World Tier 3?

World Tier 3 is designed for characters between level 50 and 70, and the enemies within the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon fittingly have a minimum level of 50. That said, you don’t actually have to reach level 50 to clear the "Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon" iconCathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon and hence switch to World Tier 3 - especially if you can get somebody to help you through it - but you’ll be underpowered compared to your foes until you hit level 50. To even the odds as much as possible, you should grind until level 50.

What Kind of Gear Do You Need for World Tier 3?

When it comes to gear, you can largely just look for bigger numbers throughout much of World Tier 1 and World Tier 2, but as you approach the end of the main campaign you’ll need to start being more picky about what you equip, especially if you have any serious plans involving Nightmare difficulty. Stats are always important, but instead of bigger numbers you’ll need to focus on gear that synergizes with your build - especially when it comes to legendary modifiers. If your Sorceress doesn’t use Hydra (or Conjuration spells in general), then stats boosting that skill or element isn’t going to be very helpful. Likewise, if your build doesn’t generate barriers or inflict stun, you’re not going to want those stats.

This is somewhat difficult to manage, as most gear will have three or four mods on them, you’re bound to get some duds. What matters most are the legendary mods, and this gear can synergize with your chosen skills and with each other, eventually having an understated snowball effect that can make an assortment of legendary mods more potent than their other stats or item level may otherwise suggest. Keep every legendary you find, especially if it has a useful legendary mod or good stats - bonus if you find one with both, but if not, you can always visit the Occultist, who can salvage Aspects (aka legendary mods) from legendary items and transfer them to other gear. You can also swap out Aspects earned by clearing Dungeons, but these tend to be on the lower end of efficacy compared to what can spawn on legendary gear you find.

The idea is simple, if you find a legendary item with a useful mod - let’s say you’re a cold-focused Sorceress and find the following legendary mod:

  • of Control: You deal 30-40% more damage to Immobilized, Stunned or Frozen enemies.

Good stuff! Problem is, it’s on a piece of gear that otherwise has suboptimal stats, or perhaps the item is just underleveled after a long tenure of service? Maybe you need it on a different item type? Whatever the case, take it to an Occultist and select the “Extract Aspect” option to destroy the legendary item while preserving its Aspect, which you can then “Imprint” onto another rare or legendary item.

As you can see, being able to extract and imprint Aspects from and onto legendary items makes getting a dud legendary a bit less painful. As long as you accumulate a respectable stock of legendary items and ensure you’ve a panoply of legendary mods that enhance your build, your character’s potency should increase far more than the Attack Power and Armor numbers on your character screen would indicate. But how, exactly, do you farm these legendaries?

How to Get Gear for World Tier 3

There are two major ways of (relatively) speedily farming legendaries in World Tier 1 and World Tier 2: clearing Dungeons and Gambling. Dungeons are pretty straight-forward; explore areas to find dungeons, enter them, complete their objectives and (usually) defeat the dungeon boss at the end. You’re guaranteed to earn an Aspect when you clear a dungeon the first time (these are account bound, so even if they’re not useful to your current character, they may be useful to subsequent characters!) and the sheer act of clearing a dungeon will likely earn you legendary drops.

Gambling, on the other hand, requires you to spend Murmuring Obols, which are rewarded when you clear Events. Most events will have a “mastery” objective that increases your rewards - including Murmuring Obols - if achieved. Just complete events, earn Murmuring Obols, then visit a Purveyor of Curiosities. This vendor will allow you to spend Murmuring Obols to gamble on various gear - you get to pick what type of item you’re gambling for, but you may get common, magical or rare items instead of the legendaries you seek. Still, gambling odds aren’t that bad in Diablo 4, and you may gain supplemental legendaries from the reward chests you earn by completing events as well as the Murmuring Obols you need to gamble.
