Diablo IV

How to Craft and Unsocket Gems in Diablo 4 - Jeweler

By
Nathan Garvin

Finding and socketing gems is a fairly simple and straightforward endeavor in Diablo 4; different gems yield different buffs when installed in socketed gear - the type of gem, the gem’s grade and the type of gear it’s inserted in all affect what stat boosts you’ll get. Sometimes, however, you want to remove socketed gems from outdated gear, or combine lesser gems into higher-grade variants. Or sometimes you just want to upgrade your jewelry, something the Blacksmith won’t do. All of these are functions of the Jeweler in Diablo 4, and this page will discuss how to unlock the Jeweler and how to make use of their various services.

Once you hit Lv20, you’ll get the “!Gem Crafting” tutorial quest, pointing you to the newly-unlocked Jeweler.

How to Unlock the Jeweler in Diablo 4

Unlocking the Jeweler (initially found along the northwestern edge of "Kyovashad" iconKyovashad) is a simple enough matter - you need to reach Lv20, at which point you’ll get a tutorial quest "Gem Crafting" iconGem Crafting, which just requires you to talk to Kyovashad’s Jeweler, Kratia, once. As you find more towns you will come across more Jewelers, and their services are all generally the same: you can Craft Gems, Unsocket Gems, Add Sockets and Upgrade Jewelry, most of which are gem-related services.

One of the primary services offered by the Jeweler is the ability to craft higher-grade gems by consuming lower grade gems and paying a gold fee.

The service you’ll probably visit the Jeweler for the most is combining gems to create more potent grades of gems. Just go to any Jeweler and navigate to the “Craft Gems” tab, where you’ll see a list of all the gems you can upgrade. Here’s how upgrading gems works:

  • All gems must be the same type and grade, i.e., all "Chipped Emerald" iconChipped Emeralds.
  • You must have a sufficient number of lower-grade gems and enough gold to upgrade.
  • Several lower-tier gems and gold will be consumed to create one gem of the next grade; three Chipped Rubies and 4,500 gold will get you one "Crude Ruby" iconCrude Ruby, for example.

Higher-tier gems grant greater bonuses, but the type of bonus they yield doesn’t change. A "Chipped Ruby" iconChipped Ruby will give +5% to Maximum Life when socketed armor, while a Crude "Ruby" iconRuby will give +5.5% to Maximum Life when socketed in armor.

How to Remove Gems Socketed into Gear in Diablo 4

Building up a collection of high-grade gems is something of an endeavor, one that’ll take a fair bit of time and resources, so you’re going to want to be picky about what gear you choose to socket. At least, you would, if the Jeweler couldn’t recover socketed gems for you. As you find newer, better gear, you may just want to move your precious gems over, and for some gold the Jeweler will salvage socketed gems for you.

How to Add Sockets to Gear in Diablo 4

Perhaps the most niche service the Jeweler offers is the ability to add sockets to gear that otherwise doesn’t possess any sockets natively. No sockets, no gems, and gear without the ability to house gems is fundamentally inferior to gear with sockets. To add sockets to gear you’ll need to offer a "Scattered Prism" iconScattered Prism, a rare drop only forfeited by World Bosses. Suffice to say, these are likely going to be valuable enough that you don’t want to use them recklessly - save them for the best gear, something you expect to have endgame utility. Not really much point in upgrading a low-level item that will be out-stated by another drop in a few levels.

How to Upgrade Jewelry in Diablo 4

The only service the Jeweler offers that doesn’t actually involve gems in any way, as the name implies the Jeweler can upgrade your jewelry. This works identically to the Blacksmith’s ability to upgrade gear - expend resources and gold and you can upgrade your rings and amulet, boosting their stats. The more you upgrade a single piece of jewelry, the greater the cost.
