How to Start Chain of Possession in Diablo 4¶

Before you can start this quest, you must first complete The Woodsman of Nevesk, where you’ll be tasked with recovering an axe - the Woodsman’s Axe - for Magdalena in Nevesk. Give the axe to her and she’ll express a desire to be rid of the thing quickly, as it feels like someone is watching her. Given that you had to defeat a massive demon - the Woodsman - to claim this weapon… yeah, there were some red flags. Afterwards, you’ll need to turn your attention northwest to Menestad, where you’ll find that this quest has popped up. Travel there and head to the western gate to find a man named Parin near some dead guard - apparently a crazed woman with an axe butchered them before fleeing into a nearby cellar. Oops.

How to Defeat Magdalena¶

Enter the nearby cellar - cheerfully named “The Red Cellar” - wherein you’ll find Magdalena. She’s got enough sense to blame you for what happened (even though she’s the one who asked us to get her the axe - she’s at least party to blame here) before the blade takes over and causes her to attack. Magdalena is an elite enemy with the Vampiric trait, meaning she’ll leech life from you if she hits. That said, she’s strictly a melee combatant, and while she can charge, she doesn’t deal a whole lot of damage, she can’t attack exceptionally fast, and her ability to pursue ranged characters is lackluster, at best. She should be an easy enough kill.

Defeat her, after which Parin will show up. Talk to him and pick the dialog option “The threat is no more.” and he’ll tell you they need to expel the demon imbued in the blade before they can destroy it, starting the followup quest [Legacy Unmade]. At least he bothers to reward you with a Cache, some XP and Gold before leaving.
