Diablo IV

How to Summon Grigoire in Diablo 4 - Living Steel Farming Guide

By
Nathan Garvin

Since its launch, Diablo 4 has been expanding in numerous ways, including its roster of enemies. One of the more prominent additions is the boss monster Grigoire, and with the addition of these optional bosses comes the inclusion of means to summon them. As with many of these powerful, optional foes, nothing is free, and you’ll need to seek out and harvest the rare resource "Living Steel" iconLiving Steel if you wish to clash with Grigoire. This page will provide information on how to find Living Steel, and how to use it to unlock the Grigoire boss fight in Diablo 4.

How to Summon Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint in Diablo 4

To fight Grigoire you’ll need to find Living Steel, and to find Living Steel you’ll need to participate in Helltide events. Helltide events will periodically spawn in random regions, persisting for an hour before vanishing for a time, only to reemerge later in another region. Helltides only start spawning when you reach World Tier III, and affected enemies are marked by red on the map. For information on Helltide Events, check out the linked page. Specifically you’re looking out for Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests, which aren’t marked on the map, but can be found by looking out for the demon the guards them - a massive specimen named He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits. If this demon doesn’t stand out enough, the red barrier that surrounds him should. You can also see the chest icon appear on the minimap when you’re close - it’s not decorated like other Tortured Gift chests. Useful if somebody else kills He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits before you find him. Spend 300 "Aberrant Cinder" iconAberrant Cinders on the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chest, defeat He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits, then loot the chest to find 1-2 Living Steel (World Tier III) or 3 Living Steel (World Tier IV).

Now that you have Living Steel, your next step should be to… farm more Living Steel! Seriously though, you’ll need 2x Living Steel to fight Grigoire in World Tier 3 and 5x Living Steel to fight him on World Tier 4, and most of the time Tortured Gifts of Living Steel chests will drop 1-2 Living Steel when opened. Once you’ve accumulated a sufficient quantity of Living Steel to suit your needs, you’ll need to fast travel to the Hall of the Penitent, which can be found along the eastern edge of the Dindai Flats region in the Dry Steppes. Head on in and fight through the Church of Light enemies until you reach a Light-Touched Altar, which, when interacted with, will allow you to select an item from your inventory. Pick the Living Steel and Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint will soon make his shocking entrance.

How to Farm Living Steel

To find Living Steel you’ll need to brave Helltide Events, which only spawn in World Tier III and World Tier IV. The core gameplay loop in Helltide Events is simple, the afflicted region’s native fauna will be largely replaced by hellish beasts, cultists, and demons, the area filled with lost souls and even the flora and ore will be corrupted and fire will rain from the sky. The enemies found in these hellscapes are generally more dangerous than those in areas unafflicted by Helltide, but for braving these hazards you’ll accumulate Aberrant Cinders, which randomly drops from nearly any source or loot in the game. You can spend these accumulated Aberrant Cinders opening Tormented Gift chests, which cost varying amounts of Aberrant Cinders and yield different rewards depending on the chest - there are Torment Gift chests that promise to offer up protection (read: armor), weaponry and jewelry, as well as extra expensive “Mystery” chests that yield great rewards at significant expense.

Living Steel can be found in very specific Tortured Gift Chests - Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests, to be precise. To open this chest you’ll need to harvest a whopping 300 Aberrant Cinders, which is no mean feat - if you’re barely surviving Helltide events, you’ll probably need to get stronger before bothering with this, as one death will forfeit half of your current Aberrant Cinders, and it’ll take some doing to accumulate the required amount. Worse yet, however, is finding these elusive Tortured Gift chests. Like the Tortured Gift of Mysteries chest, the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests aren’t marked on your map and only spawn in one or two locations in an entire Helltide area. Fortunately, the total possible spawn spots for these chests is fairly limited, so once you find one, checking back on subsequent Helltide events may bear fruit. While not marked on your map, they will appear on the minimap when you’re close enough, but the hulking demon surrounded by a red sphere of protection will probably catch your attention just as well. Speaking of which…

In addition to being hard to find and expensive to open, Tortured Gift of Living Steel chests are guarded by a unique demon named He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits, a certainly ominous, if fair title. If that’s not bad enough, the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chest will pelt you with fireballs if you stay nearby too long! The demon - unlike the chest - won’t hurt you for just being a looky-loo, but once you spend your 300 Aberrant Cinders to open the chest, the barrier around the demon will vanish and it’ll attack. Despite its size, He-Grins-Wide-And-Waits isn’t that strong, primarily attacking by swinging his massive two-handed mace and summoning other demons to do his dirty work. Smash this overgrown demon and you’ll be able to finally loot the Tortured Chest of Living Steel, which will cough up a variety of elixirs, Helltide exclusive crafting components, and the sought-after Living Steel.

(1 of 2) As his name implies, Grigoire is fond of lightning.

As his name implies, Grigoire is fond of lightning. (left), Defeat Grigoire and he’ll very likely drop a unique item. (right)

Grigiore, the Galvanic Saint Boss Tips and Strategies

Grigoire doesn’t have a ton of attacks, smashing the unrepentant with his mace and chucking bouncing Charged Bolts with every swing. He can also summon pillars that will arc lightning between them, serving as a means of area denial that restricts your movement and shocks you if you press the matter. He can also cause bolts of lightning to lance down from the sky (or roof, as the case may be) and the lightning pillars can also emit bursts of electricity. These attacks have very little warning, making them difficult to dodge. Grigoire hits like a truck and if his name and flashy entrance wasn’t a tip-off, he likes lightning. Boosting your lightning resistance before fighting Grigoire is an excellent idea (those elixirs have to be good for something, right?). Fortunately, Grigoire also summons adds, which you can use to provide corpses for minions or potentially the odd potion drop, in addition to whatever Grigoire yields as you shave away his health bar.

Soak damage and ensure Grigoire fizzles out before you do to get his drops, which are very likely to include unique gear - the entire point of Grigoire as a gameplay objective is to give the player some more or less guarantee (read: highly likely, but not actually guaranteed) unique drops. In World Tier 4, Grigoire can also drop Shards of Agony, which you’ll need to summon yet another boss - Duriel, Maggot King. For that reason, we suggest waiting until World Tier 4 to fight Grigiore, as not only will the gear he drops have a chance of being Ancestral, but you may make progress towards encountering another uber boss, in the process.

Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint Unique Drop Table

You have to put in a fair bit of work to summon Grigiore, and to reward that effort you’ll almost always score a unique item when you defeat this boss. That said, Grigoire’s level caps out at Lv75 in World Tier IV, so he’s not going to drop any uber uniques, but he will drop a fine selection of lower-tier uniques that might be just what you need for your build.
