The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

Sword and Shield Controls

By
Vincent Lau

Link’s sword and shield are his main tools for fighting monsters and defending himself. Unlike other games in the Zelda series, these control a bit differently.

Directional Slash

(1 of 2) This Deku Baba is weak to vertical slashes.

This Deku Baba is weak to vertical slashes. (left), So swing your sword upwards or downwards to slay it. (right)

A basic attack, where you slash in one of eight possible directions.

Even though it’s basic, you need to get it right because some enemies can only be defeated by slashing in a certain direction.

Motion Controls: Simply swing your Wii remote or right Joy-Con up, down, left, right or diagonally.

Button Controls: Quickly move the right stick up, down, left, right or diagonally.

Sword Thrust

A basic attack where you trust your sword forwards. Similar to above, some enemies are only susceptible to a sword thrust.

Motion Controls: Push your Wii remote or right Joy-Con forwards.

Button Controls: Click the right stick inwards.

Spin Attack

(1 of 2) Here’s your traditional spin attack.

Here’s your traditional spin attack. (left), This is a vertical spin attack. (right)

A powerful attack that can hit multiple enemies. Using it will cost some stamina. There are two versions depending on the input direction: horizontal or vertical.

Motion Controls: Flick the Nunchuk and Wii remote (or both both Joy-Con controllers) side to side for a horizontal spin attack. Or up and down for a vertical spin attack.

Button Controls: Quickly move the right stick left, right, left for a horizontal spin attack. Or up, down, up for a vertical one.

Fatal Blow

(1 of 2) Z-target an enemy that’s been knocked down and a “Fatal Blow” prompt should appear.

Z-target an enemy that’s been knocked down and a “Fatal Blow” prompt should appear. (left), Now perform a vertical spin attack. (right)

A devastating attack on a single enemy, when they’ve been knocked down.

Motion Controls: When an enemy is knocked down, lock on with Z/ZL and perform a vertical spin attack (shake both controllers upwards).

Button Controls: When an enemy is knocked down, lock on with Z/ZL and perform a vertical spin attack (up, down up on the right stick).

Skyward Strike

(1 of 2) Wait until a glint of light appears and fully surrounds your sword.

Wait until a glint of light appears and fully surrounds your sword. (left), Then swing away to perform a Skyward Strike! (right)

After acquiring the Goddess Sword, you can charge up your sword with sacred power to unleash a short-range projectile attack.

You’ll often use it for plot-related purposes, but it’s also good for hitting enemies while keeping your distance. Just know that it deals half as much damage as a direct hit from your sword.

Motion Controls: Hold your Wii remote or right Joy-Con straight upwards, then perform a directional slash or sword thrust after your sword is fully charged.

Button Controls: Hold the right stick straight upwards, then perform a directional slash or sword thrust after your sword is fully charged.

Shield Bash

(1 of 2) Shield Bash at the right time to perform a parry.

Shield Bash at the right time to perform a parry. (left), This can stun monsters, reflect projectiles and doesn’t damage your shield! (right)

This is a defensive move that raises your shield. After using a Shield Bash, your shield will remain up and automatically deflect frontal attacks at the cost of the shield gauge.

If a Shield Bash is used right before an enemy attack, you will parry the enemy, stunning them; also your shield gauge will not deplete.

Motion Controls: Shake the nunchuck or left Joy-Con when a shield is equipped.

Button Controls: Click the left-stick inwards when a shield is equipped.
