After the events in Montario, which offered a lot of story exposition, you get drawn into another fight with Louis Guiabern. This time, however, you are to do battle with him at Grand Trad, on 9/24. This bout is similar to the previous one, but Louis will be a little stronger and have more attacks in his arsenal here. Note that the shops in Grand Trad will have new equipment for you, although it can be a bit expensive.
All of Louis Guiabern’s Attacks¶
Louis will carry over some attacks from his previous battle, but he will have some new ones as well.
-
Soul Cry: He will always start his turn with this, which will grant him two additional Turn Icons.
-
Soul Scream: Louis will switch to this once he reaches 50% HP. This gives him four additional Turn Icons.
-
Royal Coercion: Another ability from the last fight, where Louis will lower someone’s attack and defence by two ranks for three turns.
-
Treasure Sword: Unlock Affinity: Louis can change the affinity of his attacks to one of the four basic elements (no Dark or Light). Note that Royal Slash and Spatial Slice can adopt these elements.
-
Royal Slash: Two-hit physical Slash attack on a single target.
-
Spatial Slice: Physical Slash attack that hits the entire party.
Louis Guiabern 9/24 Boss Strategy¶
Louis will be at full power here and he’s definitely a formidable opponent, especially since he has some tricks up his sleeve that he didn’t show off earlier. Like the previous battle, he will still always use Soul Cry on his first action to get two more Turn Icons. This will lead him into using one of his new moves, Treasure Sword: Unlock Affinity, which will have Louis basically switching the elemental affinity on his weapon. He only seems to switch between the four basic elements, which are Fire, Ice, Lightning and Wind.
He does seem to cater the affinities towards any exploitable weaknesses, so you won’t see every single element used. He still has the Royal Slash attack, which is the same, but the elemental affinity can change depending on what it currently is. He also has Royal Coercion, which will debuff a character’s attack and defence by two ranks. You definitely don’t want your defences dropped during this battle, especially in the latter half, so you should have someone constantly using Rakukaja/Marakukaja. You may think to use Dekunda, but there’s honestly no reason to really spend the MP on it, since Royal Coercion is single target and it doesn’t seem like he’ll use it a whole lot.
Louis does have a new move in this fight, which is Spatial Slice. It’s basically a party-wide physical attack that can adapt the different elemental affinities he uses. Once you get his HP to around 50%, he will stop using Soul Cry and start using Soul Scream, giving him four additional Turn Icons. Things can become quite rough here, especially if he focuses on a single character or uses Spatial Slice often. It’s best to always keep your health full and if you have Shield Arts (max out Knight), then using that can help a lot in making Louis miss and waste Turn Icons.
Thankfully, you don’t have to actually reduce his health to zero here, as the battle will automatically end once you bring it down to about 25% or so. With him down, a bunch of scenes and story will happen, with your next stop being the Ancient Eldan Sanctum.
