Using skills and magic in Metaphor: ReFantazio will deplete your MP, a precious resource that will be emptied more than once while going through some of the longer dungeons in the game. You only fully recover once you leave a dungeon completely and return to town, but that wastes your precious time, so it’s not always ideal. However, there are some great ways to get your MP back without resorting to doing that.
Use Items¶
Naturally, the first thing you will think of doing is using items to replenish your MP. The only problem with this is that MP-restoring items are kind of rare, especially towards the beginning of the game. You might be able to buy some Fruit Cordials, but they are limited in quantity. Of course, as you progress the story, you will uncover more items that will help recover your MP. For example, once you unlock cooking, you will be able to eventually create dishes that can be used to give MP back to one person, or even all allies.
Note that there are some enemies that can drop MP-restoring items, most notably the moth/butterfly-like ones. You will find these in a multitude of dungeons, so if you can find an easy way to defeat them without much trouble, then it might be a good idea to farm them. As an example, there are the Trance Crystals that continually respawn enemies, and some of them in one of the mid-game story dungeons will spit out these foes. So, you could potentially grind on these enemies, even moreso if you can defeat them on the overworld, to get the MP items.
Mage Archetype¶
One of the more common known methods of replenishing your MP involves using the Mage Archetype. Note that this method involves using the Mage on your protagonist only, as he gets a passive skill on every single Archetype he can equip. For the Mage, that passive skill involves you regaining some MP whenever you stun or defeat an enemy on the overworld (without going into a Squad Battle). Naturally, you need to be strong enough to be able to defeat the enemies on the field, but it’s the same concept as when you’re using the Merchant to farm money. The downside to this is that it only restores 1 MP for each stun/defeat, but it does so for all your party members.
Shield Blessing Skill¶
Once you clear the second major story dungeon in the game, you will unlock the Wizard Archetype, which comes from getting Rank 3 with Gallica. One of the passive skills the Wizard learns is called Shield Blessing at level 11. So, it will take a little bit to get to that skill, but it will regen MP whenever the character with it equipped has their Attack/Defense or Hit/Evasion buffed. So, you could potentially just equip an item that starts the battle with one of those above stats buffed, which will last for three turns.
The Shield Blessing skill will net you 10 MP per action for that character. With this knowledge, you could do one of two things to help regain lost MP. The first thing is to get into battle with a weaker enemy, then simply wait out your turns until your MP is at a happy level. Note that you can get two ticks per round by simply passing the turn to another character, instead of guarding. You could also stun a higher leveled enemy, pass your turns to replenish MP, then escape before the end of your second round to avoid the enemy recovering to attack.
Cursed Love Ballad¶
Cooking dishes is great and there are plenty of them that offer fantastic items to use in battles. One of the better ones is the Cursed Love Ballad, which normally is hard to make during the course of the game. This item restores 100 MP to the entire party, while also curing the Hex ailment. Once you reach the final stretch, you can purchase all of these ingredients from the merchants in Grand Trad, so it becomes a lot easier to make. You still have to be moving with your runner to cook, though, but with a large supply of ingredients, you can easily cook up a large number of this dish to last you for the rest of the story.
